Based on the idea that diversity drives growth and innovation, it would make business sense to keep DEI at the core of any company. Take Meta and Twitter as examples of diversity heavy companies. How can we bring in more women, people of color and other non traditionals into tech?
Diversity is good, but does it drive growth ? I think this “diversity drives growth” meme has been accepted without any rigorous discussion, and anytime you dig into the question it becomes a slug fest …
IMO, this is based on the parable of talents (from the Bible), which suggests that God randomly distributed talent in the world. They believe talent is equally distributed among demographics and thus outright excluding demographics from the pipeline loses opportunity for talent. Also, a diverse workforce has better power of perception (when they are used for that, of course). Now, I do agree that the real solution, apart from fixing the bias on getting to the interview pipeline is better access to quality education, housing, etc. Other than that, the problem is attempted to be fixed too late.
Most people are referring to this Harvard Business Review https://hbr.org/2013/12/how-diversity-can-drive-innovation. And it’s not so cut and dry as “it drives growth” there’s nuance. It mainly has to do with innovation through diversification of thought.
There is no single industry which is diverse enough proportional to the population. There are some industries where white men are dominant, some where women are dominant and some where people of color are dominant. The diversity in Tech is PR publicized by tech companies to avoid potential lawsuits in the future
I'm still looking for a solid, data-driven and objective document that really proves that diversity drives growth and innovation. I doubt it exists.

Diversity of thought is valuable because it leads to better discussion and ideas in the team. Diversity of skin color, hair color, gender, body weight is not valuable if all of the people think the same way.
They don’t want diversity of thought though. They want diverse skin color as long as they all agree on the mainstream narrative

I hate to break it to you, but having people of different skin colors working in a given company doesn’t do anything for innovation. Diversity of thought does lead to more growth and innovation, but that doesn’t fit the “liberal DEI” narrative.
Tech needs more diversity and inclusion. One need look no further than under represented minority exit interviews to learn that.
I agree tech workforce needs to be more diverse. However we should fix the pipeline early on by encouraging more women and POCs to study STEM, not by putting quotas in companies and different hiring bars for minorities. In most cases however it’s hard to achieve perfect diversity because you cannot compete with the work ethic of Asians

I was on a call on Thursday with about 20 colleagues of all kinds of ethnic backgrounds/gender identities, and someone was talking about a tv show they had seen as a kid and everyone but me knew about it. That’s when I realized that American diversity is very superficial, I’m a white man but I’ve got a completely different cultural background, yet I am the least diverse even though everyone else is American.

I don't think education is unaffordable. School up to college is free, and low income gets massive aid for college, aside from college name not helping much. Hell you don't even really need college. I just don't see how it's a barrier that's useful to target.
@Raytheon I agree. A bigger issue is many URMs are not well set up to self-learn (assuming that's a viable path they can take) when they need to work 1+ full time jobs to support themselves/family
