My friend wants to pursue MS in CS from USA. He is only targetting top universities like UCB/Upenn/CMU/UCLA. Does undergrad branch matter (his undergrad was in electrical engineering from India)? Do these universities favour computer science undergrads? #ms #miscellaneous
You can get into OMSCS pretty easily with EE. For U Illinois you take a test on data structures and algorithms. Austin seemed more strict about having core courses
UCB is very, very hard. They mostly favor folks from IITs and BITS CS with high GPA’s and strong recommendations from professors they know. Same for CMU MS CS but not for their other MS programs offered by their CS department. UCLA is very competitive as well for a CS grad, EE makes it even harder. I went to a so-so school, had a 9 GPA and a 323 on the GRE, didn’t even bother applying to these schools since I knew I wouldn’t get in. Someone I know went to a top NIT for CS, with a 9.1 and 331 GRE, with 3 YOE. He got rejected from GA Tech and UCSD. Top 10 CS program admissions are pretty brutal.
