I often feel where to start my work with- focus on strategy and future quarter plannings, manage stakeholder questions, take care of day to day team queries or write PRDs. Building a product from scratch and it needs lot of focus for iteration but not able to do that amongst all the other distraction. Any tips?
Prioritize to avoid time creep. Have a list of things you need to do. What is the most important thing on you plate? The one where you would get in trouble if you did not deliver on time? That's number 1. If you have multiple number 1s, the due dates will dictate the order. On your day to day stuff, can people wait? Set up the expectation that you won't respond right away unless its blocking a project or product launch. Then setup your calendar to work on your priorities. Maybe number 1 gets 10 hours a week, block your calendar for that 10 hours. Maybe you respond to questions a few times a week, maybe spending 30 mins each time. Setup time in you calendar for that. Follow your calendar and modify your calendar as priorities change.
Exactly this. Once a week I prioritize all the things I need to do and block off time the next week to do those things. For large projects I take an hour or so to break down and sequence the work, then put in my calendar things like “this week work on x” If I’m overwhelmed or know some things won’t be done on time I’ll review my priority list with my manager to get help/confirm priority and get air support for the things that will be late. I like using reclaim.ai or clockwise to block focus time in a flexible way. For recurring things like quarterly planning I figure out which week is ideal to do it and I mark that week in my calendar for the whole year. This way I don’t forget and also helps me plan vacations. You should also ask your manager what they think your ideal breakdown should be eg is 30% time on strategy appropriate for your level / the stage of the company? I always ask this at least once maybe 6-8 months into a new role and the answer is always surprising.
