Dropbox offer (Canada)

YOE: 3 (excluding internships, summer contracts, and work before university) Location: Canada (not willing to relocate) Hi! I recently got an offer from Dropbox, so I should think about negotiation. Current role: Amazon SDE2 TC: 213k CAD (not including the stock price dip) + 3 weeks vacation Dropbox offer: IC2 TC: 231k CAD + 9k CAD of "wellbeing" budget which you could spend on groceries etc, so effectively 240k TC + 4 weeks vacation + 2k USD (~2.6k CAD) donation matching to whatever charity I want + legendary wlb apparently They said that's the highest they'll go for IC2 in Canada, unless I have a competing offer - which they'll match. There's also a pre-IPO startup I interviewed at, who I may be getting an offer from this week. Their package is higher base pay (recruiter said 200-250 base) than Dropbox (144 base), but only has stock options, so I'm not sure how to evaluate. The culture at Dropbox seems really great, and doesn't have as much promotion bureaucracy nonsense. I'm pretty excited for the specific role too Now for the questions: 1) I have until Friday to accept the offer, and was wondering - should I tell my current manager first to see if Amazon will offer a higher TC? 2) Amazon RSUs vest on July 15. Is there any risk in handing in my notice before then? 3) If I get an offer from the startup, could I leverage the base pay alone to try to increase the Dropbox base pay offer? Or, could I somehow give an estimate of what the stock options expected value are? Thanks! #negotiation #offer #dropbox #canada #tech #options #amazon

Is IC2 equivalent to SWE2? What’s Dropbox paying for senior?

Yeah Dropbox IC2 is around the same as Amazon SDE2. Check out levels.fyi for the rough level mappings between different companies

Damn that’s good congrats. How was the interview and preparation? And regarding amzn stocks not sure about the vesting rules but I’d tell after if’s vested for safety

The interview process was actually pretty good. I had 2 leetcode style interviews, but one of them had a follow up with "how could you scale this to 1Tb of data", the other interview followed up with how to optimize in different ways - memory instead of time complexity. There was also a concurrency interview, which wasn't really algorithm heavy, but I had to solve with some concurrency constructs w.r.t. preparation, I did the daily leetcode problems for a couple months, and made a small side project experimenting with concurrency primitives in the language I interviewed in The behavioral interview focused on diving deep into some past projects - they asked questions about what I did specifically and about my interactions with coworkers. The systems design interview was pretty vague. Basically I was asked "how would you design xyz?", then I had to figure out and discuss requirements, then the interviewer basically asked me tons of questions about different design decisions I made. It's hard to say how much prep I had for this interview - I guess my entire career? lol. Since they're probing your knowledge holistically, it's not really something you can prepare for exactly. I think the best advice I heard for this part was to "clarify requirements first", then everything else fell into place If you pass the phone screen, the recruiter will give you a study guide too

I personally won’t hand in my offer before vesting, I feel like it might be risky and since 15th is this week then I don’t think it’s worth taking the risk. You can accept Dropbox and then start in like a month or so. That’ll give you time to put in your notice after your best date.
