15 years age difference, need advice! 🙏
Hi blind, I am planning to move to New York. Currently I have a remote job in Cali TC: is 140K base only. No RSU/ stocks. No refreshers. Is it advisable to switch jobs or keep remote job with 140K TC to live in new york? I am tired of my boring life in the Bay Area and have no social life, just at home all day with no friends. age: 25 TC: base only 140K #misc #housing
You’ll be fine with that income. Move, settle in and then switch jobs
140 is manageable I do it with 170k but you’ll be living in a 250sq foot studio.
Take advantage of being remote! Rent a room there for awhile and go from there…and in the meantime look for a new job. I WFH as well and take every opportunity I can to work from other areas. I’ve spent 6 weeks in NYC this year (found a guy that travels and I rent out his place when he’s out of town). It works out well for both of us 😀 gotta do it while you are young and no responsibilities.
If you wait for a new job to move, it’ll be hard to get an employer to pay for your move cross-country. And, except for remote jobs, most employers will prefer local candidates, so if you apply to NYC jobs, you won’t get a second look being on the west coast (unless the employer has a choice of offices). So I’d move while you have this remote job, and then you’ll need to find something w higher pay. 140k in NYC is 96k after taxes, that doesn’t go far, but you’re 25, so totally doable. No better city to be 25. Lots of free stuff to do. Forget your sitting alone at home and no social life. Never alone. Check out streeteasy.com to see what you can afford. Consider Astoria in Queens (relatively inexpensive, very close to Manhattan and more mom and pop landlords = no broker fees and fewer co-ops, where the application takes a long time) or NJ, which sort of beats the purpose of moving to NYC, but it’s a start. Mb consider roommates, find neighborhood/city roomate groups on FB, then Manhattan is doable
Why are you double posting
I make 105 base and really enjoy it here. Please don’t listen to the general consensus that you need 200k+ to enjoy New York, it’s so inaccurate and it’s always being pushed here
Don't forget about taxes if you would attempt first to visit and work temporarily. NY State watches cell phone towers like a hawk.
Being remote is great, I got to try out a few different cities for the past 2-3 years
which ones? I was thinking doing something like that do. Visited all major cities 10 years ago but was thinking recently to try NYC, Austin for extended stay. Not sure how to handle taxes and a mailing address though.
You will need to have a long term or permanent address unfortunately. It’s difficult if you don’t have anybody’s address you could use. I have used other friends’ addresses in other states, but that was only for a few months each time (4-6 months). For the most part I use my parents address for mailing and all paperwork. Your taxes will have to be done from that permanent address. I guess if don’t have those options, the worst case would be to sign a lease in a LCOL state — you might not even have to physically move in once you get the apartment. The downside is you’d be paying rent on a place you don’t use, so finding a cheap place in a LCOL city would help to mitigate that.
SWE? There are jobs that will pay more in NYC, but there is a wide range.
yeah
