Hi Blind community, I have an offer from EA working either in the UK (Guildford office) or remote within the EU. I don't want to give too many details about the TC to not dox myself but I'm happy with what I'm getting as it's a solid increase from my current job, especially after tax. Now the question is: do I relocate to the UK to work in their office or go full remote in another country? Here is my line of thought about the two options: Pros of working on location: - Nice office - Decent city relatively close to London - Plenty of economic opportunities if I want to switch jobs later down the line - Slightly higher TC Cons of working on location: - Flat will be smaller and more expensive - Away from extended family - Higher cost of living Pros of working full remote: - No commute - Nicer city to live in, lower cost of living - Close to friends and family - No one watching over my shoulder Cons of working full remote: - No physical colleagues - Slightly lower TC - Have to pay more to afford a place big enough to live and work in - Very hard to switch jobs #gaming #EA #remote #wfh
If TC is the same there is literally no reason NOT to get the remote assignment. You could move where you want after. Just know that moving will trigger a comp eval, but starting as assigned to remote will be better.
I see it the other way around. My job will rely a lot on interviewing users and shadowing them. I feel that doing that from afar will be suboptimal but I’m willing to be convinced otherwise.
Most remote offers don’t ban you from the local office. Most places have areas you could use temporarily if you feel more comfortable interviewing users in person for instance.
Remote.
Not from EA but I have worked remote in gaming for 10 years now. Primary thing, is that it's harder to socialize/network while remote unless both parties put in the effort. While I 100% prefer full remote, I do think it comes at a cost to my own career advancement. At the same time though, it does make it easier to hop companies so that can offset that somewhat.
A lot of people here are big on remote, and that’s fine. Your options sound close enough to me where it’s really going to come down to whether or not you like the social atmosphere of an office or, if remote, you feel like your personal social needs are met with friends and family outside of work.
