Hey there- first post! Looking for salary comps for a somewhat unique role in Investment Management- sustainability/ESG analyst. I cover equity research for all sectors but through a sustainability lens rather than traditional fundamental analyst. Been investment analyst for 5 years, was a sustainability consultant for 5 years prior to the MBA/pivot to finance.
Family office, $1.5b AUM.. standard fee structure, I’m the only sustainability analyst
I present to key clients who care about this stuff and do a lot of reporting and marketing too along w standard analyst work ...
For 5 years you’re edging a typical associate or vp title. I would say roughly 100-120k base and 20-35% bonus? I used to work with ESG strategists and I would say this would be the typical range
Super helpful- thank you! Based on Glassdoor etc I had the sense my comp was low but my company is not in a major coastal market (but our clients are) so it’s hard to know exactly where I fit... currently $66k + 20% bonus - 2019 was a big year so hoping for a jump bc I feel like every year of undermarket pay sets me back farther and farther.. firm has strict rules not to speak about comp with coworkers but the investment team is small so not a lot of data anyway.
I see, I think your base is a bit low. Are you in a big city? The numbers are what I see for SF, NY, Boston mainly. I think if you are looking to a larger market, you should see a significant increase
I agree with the above, you said you’ve been there for 5 years and have an MBA? how has your salary progressed since you started?
Progression ~10% annually. I’m in the Rocky Mountain West area, company is very small- 15 people. I *believe* I’ve added a lot of value the past year taking on more responsibility and many successful client interactions. Have had a couple offers but they’d require me to move to NY/Boston and I love QOL I have now in Colorado. Have a family and we’re rooted. So there’s definitely value to that. Offers have been in the upper 90’s base pay. For those in asset management- what kinds of metrics should I demonstrate when negotiating for a market rate salary? How can I make my case most effectively?
This is a bit delayed response but here it goes - I think that the comp for an ESG strategist and a fundamental strategist should not be that different unless either of them has a profit contract for a % of fund’s profits. In fact, I’d expect an ESG analyst to command a higher comp than say a quant because 1) esg is strategically aligned with the direction the company is going 2) the research process is more time consuming. That said, some funds treat ESG integration more as a regulatory requirement / risk mgmt process, and you may not even be able to get a seat at the investment committee meeting, resulting in a discount.
