PARIS/BRUSSELS, Sept 9 (Reuters) - The European Union's executive body will launch a consultation early next year on whether tech giants should bear some of the costs of Europe's telecoms network, EU industry chief Thierry Breton said on Friday. Europe's telecoms operators have long lobbied for a financial contribution from U.S. tech firm's such as Alphabet's Google (GOOGL.O), Meta's Facebook and Netflix (NFLX.O), saying that they use a huge part of the internet traffic. "We also need to review whether the regulation is adapted with the 'GAFAs' (Google, Apple, Facebook, Amazon) for example, which use bandwidth (provided by) telecom operators," Breton told reporters, speaking in French. https://www.reuters.com/technology/eu-consult-big-tech-contribution-telco-networks-by-end-q1-2023-2022-09-09/
Pretty typical cash grab by EU going after American companies because they can’t seem to produce any successes locally
Eu is dumb af
“Fair share” 🤮
US created the internet And it's time we kick EU out of it
Imagine an internet without Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, popular social media Being cut-off from the rest of the world European celebs losing millions of followers, no Netflix to watch Who would use such a shitty internet More sensible reasoning, government maintains the telecom network and infra It's funded by tax, from tech companies Makes no sense to ask for more money
Contrary to what you read on Reddit, Europe is pathetic.
It’s true
Imagine if these companies just threatened to leave Europe how fast their tune would change lol Oh it’s not free anymore? That’s cool we just won’t use them
The EU should pay Google and write a thank you note that their citizens can perform searches and watch YouTube videos for free
Why apple? Because of their market cap? Better include all phone manufacturers then…
EU racist to Apple
Orange supremacy
They're literally doing everything other than taking responsibility lol, EU being EU as usual I guess...
