I am surprised why would he accept a role for which he doesn't seem to have the competence. Twitch was a very different kind of company. This choice seems very random and reflects poorly on the OpenAI board. Secondly, there may not be a company to be the CEO of for very long anyway. Same goes for Kyle Vogt. Trying to be the founder/CTO/CEO for building self driving car company which is a very niche skillset requiring you to push the boundaries of ML/AI research for which he had no experience. In these fields it is important to have technological depth so you are able to differentiate fact from fiction and make nuanced decisions based on that depth. #tech #openai #cruiseautomation #twitch
Are you implying that Sama knows more?
That's a fair point. But one can argue that Open AI is in this mess because of that original sin. Trying to move fast like Cruise without understanding the implications of their growth for the sake of growth actions.
Are you implying that the OpenAI board is incompetent? That is a very strong statement.
Yes
Definitely not good at being board members
You are absolutely wrong about cruise. Their cars are incredible— you’ve probably never been in them. I took hundreds and had a flawless experience in each. At par/better than Waymo. It’s sad that they got banned over one incident
And you are wrong about thinking that it's just one incident that caused this.
I have taken cruise a bunch. I wouldn’t call it flawless. Definitely sped up during periods I expected to slow down. Especially awkward parking. It’s the lack of improvements for this long in Beta, that surprise me. I completely agree with testing in the wild, but cruise’s quirks didn’t improve over time. I do think it’s unfortunate they have taken it to being banned to get better.
Seems like a good pick by the board. How many people have CEO experience, are currently jobless and therefore immediately available, and feel strongly about x-risk?
Do you think gpt3,4,5 pose x-risks?
gpt-3/4, no. I don't know anything about gpt-5 yet
And here are comments made by random L5 on who is qualified to be a CEO of the hottest startup. Even if you are a L8 you have zero credibility.
How about L10? Would that fulfill your question asking criteria?
Serial CEOs, VPs, etc. are there to rotate from company to company for clout and money. Not to bring anything new to the table.
Then why do companies hire them? Can’t they just promote internally like mira murati
I will be completely fine if he was hired as the CEO of Tiktok, Instacart, Door dash etc. OpenAI is a very different kind of company. I am not doubting his ability to be a CEO but questioning the match for this role.
Justin “Ketamine Snorter” Kan for OpenAI ceo!
There needs to be private investigations on each of the board members right now to find out who are they calling the shots on behalf of. Clearly there are strong outside influences involved here since no self-respecting human would want to continue as a board member when none of the leadership as well as employees want them nor do any investors. When they know that their actions are single handedly destroying company value they continue to persist, how on earth is this called protecting the interests of the company?!
Be weary of those who have dreams of kingdoms behind their eyes.
