As title suggests, looking for any words of advice for engrs who have decided to pursue a different career, esp cpas. I only put this in aviation industry due to my current status as an engineer at ngc. I am personally very sick and tired of engineering now. I am currently a lvl 4 system/hw engineer and am currently very dissatisfied with the current work. At most i can probably level up once (maybe twice), but i can no longer finding meaning in work i do, nor the value of working hard either. The increased taxes due to recent level up and income bracket basically confirmed my questioning of needing to work hard. My passion for rockets or cars got me started on engineering, but now, my passion just died, even to the extent that my interest for cars got replaced with my interest for whiskeys. Maybe i could leetcode and try getting in the tech, but then tc aside, i am just fed up with the idea of working for a boss. Same with contractor gigs. Sure i can write my expense off, and get paid ot, but the idea of just having to suddenly come on weekend, not because i need to get work done, but to help my pm flash his dick to upper management, just turns me off. I do not mind working hard, but then i want to reap my own benefits, write expenses off, and ultimately, work on my own accord and try to find meaning by seeing fruits of my labors, not superficial bs bonus that uncle sam takes. In fact, i have seen my best friend quit his job and run a teriyaki grill and while he grinds more, he is a happier mofo (and a wealthier one), which i brought over to my dad, while drinking with him. Here is where the cpa comes in. My dad and uncle own a cpa firm, and they entertained me with an idea of taking over their firm, given they may retire soon. Only thing my dad did require is that i get my cpa license, as well as work for him, for a paycut, for a year or two, until my dad turns 65. What he did suggest is that i get contract job to just get myself fed and study for my cpa exam, with a goal of getting a license by end of 2023 That said, i would like to see if any cpas exist in blind, and tell me where is a good place to start studying for the cpa license, let me know whether above game plan is feasible, and also to provide two cents as life of a cpa. If you think pursuing a cpa, as a means checking the self employment box that i intend to utilize, is no a great idea, please let me know your rationale. After all, running a boba place or a restaurant may be a better option for me, as far as self employment goes, which means i will have to plan out more. That said, anyone who has some expertise on pursuing self employment, esp. as an engineer, feel free to chime in!
I cannot comment about you pursuing a new CPA career but maybe you just need a job change? You work at NGC. The defense/aerospace sector does have a habit of sucking the life and energy out of people. Not necessarily suggesting you go for FAANG, but there are tons of companies out there that might respark your interest.
Given your own family history, you're going to know better how to crack into CPA field. My understanding is that CPA is seasonal with a big crunch heading into April 15 every year. There is a lot of value in being your own boss - for your happiness. I'd take a moderate paycut if my business gave me that kind of revenue without being too risky.
Thanks. Like other reply, the defense culture is the one i am sick and tired of. As an auto-turned defense, now i see why all gm and ford cars are such shit build quality lol…(and asian companies are cheap because they suck the soul out of them, with peanuts for salaries). That said, you are reading my mind like a psychic. I saw my dad crunch from jan to april every year, save up, and enjoy traveling and golfing during chilll season. Hes not rich by means, but god i envy his dof, while i got a pm being mad karen on me for not being on site supporting a project, on last minute, due to planned business trip
Have you looked at the advanced air mobility sector? It's half aviation and half tech. Some of our best people came from NG :)
