A Microsoft guy's post about the majority (East) Asian team at Linkedin has me wondering - what are the ethnicity demographic breakdowns at each Tech company in the Silicon Valley? Diversity numbers always lump Indians (South Asians) and East and Southeast Asians into one supergroup "Asian" even though the ethnicities share very little culturally. This might be helpful information if you want to avoid being the minority in a monoculture. For example, looking around the Santa Clara cafes (we have 2) at lunch: Intel: roughly 70+% Indian in Santa Clara, 20% East Asian (mostly Chinese), 7% white, 3% URM (blacks/Hispanic). Other tech companies that have a rep for mostly Indian: -Paypal, Ebay, Cisco, Nutanix(founded by Indians), Amazon vs Lab126 Other tech companies that have a rep for mostly East Asian (Chinese): -Linkedin, Airbnb, Nio/Huawei (Chinese companies obviously) Google and FB seemed to have a more healthy mix of ethnicities when I was on their campuses for lunch. What about Apple, Cruise, Salesforce, Netflix, Oracle, Adobe, Uber, Airbnb, Lyft, Pinterest, Samsung (San Jose -- can't be all Koreans can it?), others? What is the demographic breakdown at your location/site and company?
It's a vastly different makeup at Intel rnb (the hq 🏢) op is describing the engineering building. Rnb is a good mix.
Juniper: >70% indian, ~18% chinese. Let me add that the ratio of men to women is 10:1.
That sounds horrible for reproducing
how about facebook?
How about bcom? What is it like there with that ruthless CEO you guys have?
FB had significantly fewer Indians than those old ICE (Intel, Cisco, Ebay) companies. More White and East Asian, but I didn't really attempt a more comprehensive visual survey.
Maybe overall but Apple engineering has >90% Indians
It's a general rule that the business roles are reserved for white people. While the H1B slaves are brought in for the grunt engineering work so that's no surprise.
Oracle HQ : 70% Tamil Nadu, 5% non South Indian, 20% Chinese and who knows what the rest is... if you are not in the demographics listed above, people look at you suspiciously ;-)
Pinterest Engineering is about 50% Chinese, 30% White, 10% Indian Non-Engineering is 90% white women
I’m from Europe. We probably have less than 0.1% Europeans in fb engineering :( I like working with different ethnicities but wish other continents would get more representation. Just because Chinese and Indians know how to game the interview system doesn’t mean there is no talent in South America, Africa or Europe
Tell me more about your thoughts around gaming the interview. I have no clue what you mean by that. Fwiw: I’m Dropbox/Asian/M
White people can take easy business/manager roles that pay as much TC as engineering with much less work and more exposure. Just because white people know how to game the business system doesnt mean there isnt business talent in Asia. I went to a top 10 American university. I can confirm most of my engineering classmates were nonwhite. Business school on the other hand was full of entitled white frat boys and girls.
Facebook is exceptional in that much fewer Indians comparing to Chinese. Also comparing to other big tech, we have disproportionately small number of Indians. FB is a Chinese-dominated company along with White men.
Ebay engineering is 70% Indian, 25% Chinese/east asian(very few other east asians) 5% white Managers/business is 85% white/american 10% Indian 5% Chinese Will not differentiate between Chinese and Asian Americans. There arent that many Asian Americans in the company to be honest. I am Asian American myself. Engineering seems to be completely full of H1B workers No presence of black/latino/middle eastern people. Literally did not see a single person from those ethnicities besides the service staff.
Most of our management is middle eastern, I don’t know why maybe because founder is? It’s a very high percentage because there are very few middle eastern immigrants compared to Indians and Chinese
About 60% Indian, 30% Chinese, 10% other in my neck of the woods.
MTV HQ?
Yes
