Evaluating LinkedIn SWE offer

Yoe 5 yrs 160 base 260 RSU over 4 years 10% bonus 55000 joining bonus How easy is it to progress to SSE at LinkedIn considering SE is a downlevel for 5 yoe?

LinkedIn GVwB28 Feb 21, 2020

That’s a pretty good offer for SWE. Moving to Sr SWE is relatively easy - work on sizable projects and have sizable impact.

Cisco Meh313 OP Feb 21, 2020

thanks.. how significant is comp adjustment for internal promo ? there seems to be a significant difference in compensation for a SWE and SSWE external hire..

Oracle fghij9 Feb 21, 2020

Downlevel. Linkedin Senior is basically L4 at Google and actually I would map it lesser as everyone does it in a year as the titles there are inflated af

Cisco Meh313 OP Feb 21, 2020

yeah.. i know its a downlevel.. had bad luck with one of the interviewer who was very interruptive.. anywyz water under the bridge 😊...i am not really interested in titles since they map differently at different companies but was looking from a compensation angle.. linkedin SSE comp is pretty decent..

LinkedIn gunv Feb 21, 2020

Very few do it in a year. You can come here and try it yourself

You can DM me

You could probably get a promo in 1-2 years fairly easily. That’s a pretty strong SWE offer though. Only like 10/15% off of my senior numbers. If you like the culture and don’t have any competing offers, then seems like a good jump!

LinkedIn ztn Feb 21, 2020

whats the requirements for promoting senior to staff

LinkedIn gunv Feb 21, 2020

Same just 10-15 % off of my senior numbers. Don't expect much raise though during your senior promotion. You will get it in 1-2 years maximum

Apple APmcth Feb 21, 2020

I would not take the down level unless you are in desperate need to switch jobs. This will literally put your career on a back foot by couple years at least since promotion depends on a lot of factors.

Cisco Meh313 OP Feb 21, 2020

yeah..that is definately one of a major concern but i was considering this opportunity because i am changing career from networking to apps backend, so wasnt getting a lot of SSE opportunities.. anyways thanks for the advice..

That's a crazy good SWE offer. Sr promo should be doable in 1 to 1.5 years for you. Just make sure your manager is aware that that is your expectation. But don't expect a huge bump in TC with Sr. Maybe 20% max. Since you're changing career track, I think it is a fair deal and LinkedIn is the best company for this since it is relatively easy to get to senior if you can prove yourself.

Congratulations, can you share your interview experience? Was it for applications team ?

Cisco Meh313 OP Feb 22, 2020

yes it was for apps team.. interviewed for SSE but i think was pulled down due to weak sys design feedback.. ironically i was most comfortable with sys design questn coz i had practiced similar question before. but the interviewer came in with a critical mindset and kept dragging the conversation on every minor item.. so a little bad luck there.. 😊 but mostly generic LC based interview like FB and overall not very difficult.

Walmart itstime1 Feb 23, 2020

Thank you, did you get LC hard ? Or was it only 1-2 easy/mediums ?

LinkedIn Auzl38 Feb 23, 2020

Unpopular opinion here but I would not go for a down leveling. It limits the growth in compensation before you get promoted- which also has a luck component. Also LinkedIn is a hierarchical company and the comfort level is staff- so down level prolongs your progress to that level
