Need some help in evaluating the Morgan Stanley VP tech (Data Scientist/Data Engineer) offer for the NYC location. Base: 170k Bonus: Discretionary based on company performance/individual performance. The recruiter did not provide a set % when asked for. No relocation package. Is this common among VP roles? YOE: 5-6 Education: Masters Would it better to negotiate on the base (200k) or target annual bonus (50-100)? I wonder if they do both? Which one is the best option in terms of TC? #morganstanley #compensation #salaries #datascience #dataengineer #tech #goldmansachs #salarynegotiation #salarycomparison #jpmorgan #jpmorganchase
VP=senior I guess?
Right
Ask for more as it's difficult to get hikes once u join. No rsu is expected but with the market today you can negotiate joining bonus
I think it is not bad
Which division offers highest bonus?
You should negotiate first years bonus which generally is a baseline for future years. VP for 5 yrs is pretty good btw
Whenever I ask bonus, they say its discretionary and dependent on company and individual performance. Why don't they provide a set percentage or number?? Is that the standard?
They do, if they really want you. It gets entered into HR systems though you won't see on the offer letter
Which division is this for? Bonus will heavily vary across ISG, MSIM and MSWM
Its for Finance division.
Agree. Bonuses are heavily driven by the division you are part of or if your team has a direct business line/revenue stream(if you are part of some infrastructure teans working for other tech teams who have their business lines then bonus can vary alot) I don't think RSU are provided on the tech side as part of TC, atleast till VP level, from what I have heard. Joining bonus should be negotiated.
Whats a good range for that?
There is no specific range as far as I know. As long as you can join asap, they normally should agree for a joining bonus. I didn't got any when I joined so I am not of the range.
Your base is pretty decent. I think VP tops out around 200k. I would definitely try to negotiate a first year annual bonus. Every division is different, but from what I've seen they try to set your bonus each year relative to the year before, so negotiating a solid annual bonus for your first year would definitely serve you well. Azure is in very high demand, so going off of your name I think you could stand to negotiate a pretty decent bonus. With a 170k base I'd probably ask to lock in a first year bonus between 50-100k.
So, the annual bonus you mentioned is excluding the sign-on bonus in case we are trying to consider that?

Vp is an inflated title in banking. It’s not really a vp role just a fancy title. Equal to maybe manager at best
It's not inflated they just have a different title structure.
