I am curious if everyone company/managers would document everything from 1:1? Career growth, new ideas, sprint work what not. My current manager documents everything what I say, not sure if it is good idea. More information in the comments would be helpful. #tech #sde #sdet
I do it, and it helps me gets the most out of that time. Here’s how I structure mine: - feedback for teammates - expectations section where I drop evidence of performing and over performing - section for weekly convos with topics/questions Yes, this very doc could be used to fire/pip me, but also, I don’t care. I need this feedback and need it written down for it to be useful for me. I imagine that your manager has the same thoughts. The red flag for me was talking about sprint work. I’d work on a communication system to avoid having to spend any 1:1 time talking about updates on a ticket.
How can i avoid it? He asks me how is it going, so i cant skip. Also 1:1 is every week, I don't have new topic for every week. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated on what to talk on every week.
Since you’re remote, leave updates in the ticket. If you have a team lead, setup up some time where you give them updates async or sync. Give detailed stand ups. Ime your manager shouldn’t need more details than that as long as they are seeing ticket movement or comments. For conversations, here’s some examples: ask questions about stuff talked about during all hands, figure out upcoming projects, build a skill together, do a retro on a project, give the manager feedback, clarify expectations, schedule some time for formalized feedback, pitch a project you think would be good, or ask for them to collect feedback. I wouldnt recommend asking for all that, and tbh if your company has a feedback schedule, I wouldn’t worry too much about getting peer feedback. Just make sure that you and your manager agree on how you’re performing and generally understand how you’re going to get to the next level.
I don’t like that
Me neither, but he is my manager so can't avoid.
Notes can be used as documentation but don’t worry about it, u should also keep notes to see how u can make these meetings more useful.
There’s a quarterly quota for PIPs and it sounds like you might be next. Is there a narrative around ‚supporting‘ you? Else, I wouldn’t worry.
Oh, and before the mandatory debate about sources and fearmongering gets going - have you noticed a lot of colleagues ‚deciding‘’ to leave recently?
As a staff eng I do it with both manager and peers, my skip is documenting it too. Never ever it backfired. I do it to go back and recollect what is it we discussed, otherwise it’s too much stuff to keep in my head and my brain runs gc cycle couple hours after. Without notes time spent on 1:1 will be 70% wasted and I don’t like to waste my time. P.S. I am remote too. Just make your work visible and it won’t be a factor
Yes means common to document everything. Looks like some managers do that, snap for example above he also pointed a red flag, I will try to handle with my manager.
Does it feel malicious? Some people just process information via note taking
I felt today and my 1:1 is every week. I am remote and I never met my team in person.
