I have few hundred EUR, GBP and CAD. What's the cheapest way to convert them to USD. I see that currency exchanges at airports rip off people so wanted to know if someone knows of a better way. Can I exchange coins too or only notes?
Just have it exchanged at a bank. Too much trouble to get a really low exchange fee for a few hundred.
Thanks a lot. I didn't knew we can deposit foreign currency at a bank. I just did mine at Bank of America !
The bank conversion rates are a rip off if got specifically buy/sell at their branches. If you go to a foreign country and withdraw local currency from an atm, then the conversion rate is good.
I've transferred about $10000 with transfer wise. Works great. Less fees than the banks wanted
Just curious: what is the difference if you exchange at currency exchange in a mall vs other methods above to qualify it as "rip-off"?
Last time I went to the mall to try to get another currency, they tried giving me a rate that's effectively about 20% less than what I should have gotten at fair market rate. Luckily my wife had enough knowledge about the exchange rate to pull me away.
I just put it in my sock drawer and next time I hear a friend or co-worker is traveling there I make a deal with them. they get a better rate too. everybody wins.
