Asking for my boyfriend. He is into QA (automation), and almost all companies are closing down the role/department. What is the alternate path? He is not into management and so trying to figure out the scope for data science or Front end and how would he get his first opportunity? Do you have any experience with boot camp or any other suggestions?
SDET/QA has been canceled at MS for a few years now. I recommend being a dev in what ever area you tested well.. ie. if you test front end all day get into UI development..
This. My partner's company moved QA functions to the developers and laid off most of the QA team in 2020. Your SO should brush up on coding skills, which he already has, and move into a dev role - frontend or backend (whatever he enjoys).
Transition into dev role seems to be a good path for him. Bootcamp should help. He can also volunteer inside the company for some internal projects he is interested in. If the interest is about machine learning, AI, or data analysis, go for data science. If the passion is for UI, go for front end.
QA is shutting down but roles like SDET are on rise. You're only doing QA/Automation in your role then obviously company will never value you much. Every week I get calls for SDET and it's not going anyway. SDET and Devops are both roles which will continue to grow. Btw my company is hiring for SDET roles if your boyfriend is open.
I don’t think QA roles are completely shutdown. I still see opportunities around. The number of qa engineers are definitely going down and lot of companies are outsourcing qa engineers.
