Exploding offers

I have verbal offers from a couple companies. I already delayed receiving the offers by 1 week; however, they are expecting to give me their offers early next week with a 48hr expiration. At the same time I am going onsite to Google and Facebook. Facebook is the company I want to join. However, if I don't get it I am happy to join one of the companies I got an offer for already (current TC: 200, proposed TC: ~350) What can I do to keep the company on the hook a little bit longer until I get some indication from Facebook?

I think you should just be straight forward and honest to the recruiters, tell them you need some more time. If they really want you there should be no problem

Why FB over google? No hate just curious. I can’t even get my current offer extended by a week so consider yourself lucky!

Fair question. I have been in the same tech area for the past 8 years. Google is going to be more of the same. Facebook will be generalist and I assume through boot camp so it will be very different than what I have been working on.

Say yes and continue interviewing. If Facebook lands in your lap you can switch then. I’ve had some folks do that to us. It doesn’t feel good, but it’s not rare.

That seems really unprofessional. Ever watch Silicon Valley?

They are right! This happens more often than not

Simple. Call them out on it. Tell them you don't do exploding offers and ask them to change it.

This.

One trick you could do is don’t connect with them on phone until you’ve done interviewing

Does not matter they can still send u the offer in email and say u have x days to respond or they consider it declined. They seem to bully u into accepting.

When you talk to the recruiter, be firm. That’s the trick. Ask them why do you have to make a decision in such a short period of time? Tell them this is a big decision for you and it’s in the best interest of both parties that you make a wise and educated decision, and not a rushed one. Then allow time for the awkward silence. If they insist, just repeat the same thing firmly. Every time you repeat, let the awkward silence happen and wait for them to come back. Make it clear that you won’t be able to make a decision if they give you an offer now. You’re waiting for more data points in order to make the right decision. That’s what I did with a very pushy Uber recruiter. I was firm. I repeated the same thing again and again. In the end the recruiter said ok I’m not gonna give you the offer until you’re ready to make a decision.

really helpful, thank you

Bear in mind, as soon as it's clear one employer has countered any offer, any original timeline is out the window. You can use this to reset the clock if needed.

Nobody should have to deal with exploding offers. Simply tell them you will not be forced into such an important decision. Nip that in the bud immediately.
