Hi folks! There seems to be a disconnect in the amount of efforts SDE puts in vs the recognition they get. I understand that internally in a company thats more of a cultural problem, but even externally i see this disparity. 1. If you deliver something for a customer, the PMs get tagged on LinkedIn by the customer 2. SAs build demos on and share it online 3. Staff and Principle get to give talks in conferences All of them are able to take their day to day work and gain internal and external visibility. I am currently a Sr SDE and wondering if others have managed to create external visibility for themselves? #careerbuilder
Nobody cares about effort and only result to be frank, even the result should high impacting business needs not a low hanging need
Thats true! But even if you do infact deliver results, there is no way for a SDE to use that for external visibility. IF there is an external facing blog, you can share it on LinkedIn. Its very generic.
Talk to your manager about it. Mention that you are interested in speaking about your product in industry conferences and ask them what are some good starting points.
It’s hard to hear but how much of value you think one single SDE would create on their own, that worthy public attention? When people at a higher level talk in public, they represent a team behind them and people know it.
Agreed! But if you look at the world, almost everyone in some way or form is building a personal brand or creating visibility. So how can non-title-holder SDE create something for themselves? Some high touch things i can think of: 1. Blogs 2. GitHub repos 3. YT channel Do you know of any other ways?
Resign or change job role or create new LP or pip them all
Theres gotta to be a better way!!
Ask them to meet in the parking lot.
