With the sky high TC packages offered by FAANG does anybody else feel innovation is being stifled by startups trying to do sonething truly ground breaking?
Hardly anyone on blind talks about startups these days. It’s all about maximizing the TC...
Because nobody interested in startups or working for one comes on Blind. Just selection bias.
Well I’m here and I work at a startup.
WeInnovated, WeWorked.
What I think you're trying to ask is "does the high pay and overall prestige of large companies stifle innovation". In my opinion, 100%. The world doesn't need a better social feed or more effective ad-tech, and yet most of the high capacity technical talent is being absorbed by these companies. With the exception of Google, who probably is actually trying to solve big problems, this is a massive waste of resources. Sadly, it's happening at a time when we have a lot of big problems to solve and ostensibly only a few generations to solve them before things become truly and properly fucked.
I'm really not sure about Google to be honest. On paper, it seems like they're working on 100 plus one problems, but I really haven't seen their progress on bringing any of these new products to mkt. I have seen them kill off a bunch of products though. https://killedbygoogle.com/
I'm not sure either, but they seem the most earnest about it.
It's not sky high. It's just a living wage.
Compared to the non-FAANG no name companies I can see why they think it’s sky high.
FAANG TC is way beyond “living wage” 😂
For the Bay, it's a living wage.
If that's the case, then how am I saving 65% of my pre-tax TC?
No idea why people say that. It’s a lot for anywhere in the world.
How much do you make and how do you live?
I think they are by monopolizing access to data, controlling distribution, and killing off any competition that has slightest chance to affect their core business. Useful consumer startups are pretty much dead and CAC for any marketplace/ e-commerce startup is off the roof! Most DTC brands/ subscription brands are dying. Google killed email marketing as well by marking most as spam or redirecting emails to promotion folder by default. Amazon is copying popular 3P products and selling them at discount and also favoring private label over 3P items. It’s now charging these 3P sellers to rank up higher on the SRP. As a small business it’s harder than ever to grow .
"Google killed email marketing". You mean they killed spam ?
Yes they did kill SPAM, no doubt about that. But along with it they also killed a FREE channel to market. By moving promotions to a separate Tab in addition and placing an ad on top of it... they are sending a clear message to pay to reach your audience. Google SRP is also filled with more ads now. Meaningful SEO is pretty much dead for any one starting business now. Do not get me wrong. Google did of good things, but it came with a steep cost that we all pay in some form or another.
