heard lots of bad things about FB. Trying to evaluate FB vs G, questions: 1. What’s the workload here, is it 996, 995, or 9-9-7? 2. Does Facebook evaluate people based on the actual result or the the time you spent on working? 3. Which one worse, FB or Apple? 4. Given FB brand is not good, would it reduce future opportunities for me to move to other companies? 5. What’s the percentage of people getting PIPed every year? About myself: 10yoe at G, tc increase: 45% (this might reduce slightly given g stock increases everyday these days). Flat rating for a while, limited growth opportunities
Worth it! Whether good or not, see it by yourself. And then you know what is the next company worth jumping into.
FB brand as an unethical company and a cancer on society is well earned. Also company declining long term due to increased government regulation, their toxic business model, limits on cross app tracking and weak senior leadership. Avoid!
Says the guy that works for a company that treats its employees very unethically
Saying an other company is bad doesn't automatically say that I am excusing the shit my company does. Same for personal stuff too. Stop drawing straw man arguments because it's easy to just type
Actually answering your questions instead of just shitting on your post: 1. My experience has been 995. YMMV. 2. The result, pretty strongly. But because everyone is working so "hard", you're unlikely to find that impact relative to others without also working long hours. 3. Never been. 4. I don't think so. I've talked around to some pretty progressive companies, and most people are happy to conveniently ignore our genocidal ways. 5. Honestly don't know. I'd guess <5%.
Question 2: totally the actual result and how you market it. Nobody nobody cares about how long you have worked
Got it. Does this apply to E7+ SWEs? Why do so many people work overtime?
I m not so senior, but I think it applies to >= 7. From what Im experiencing, I feel pressure to produce impactful outcomes. You dont know how impactful a project is going to be. Hence, I feel constantly wondering if my impact is enough for psc and It happens that I work longer. But this happens usually in the second part of the half
Answering for brand related question . If you think you can sleep well ignoring all the societal mess that Facebook has put us into then brand is no longer an issue for you . Think about it in this way , when you die will you regret working for facebook. If not then don’t try to optimize for it , just optimize for your TC and career growth .
Thanks good advice. I can move internally at G, but the growth opportunity is rare. I really feel passionate about the project I am going to work at Facebook, it’s an area I feel quite motivated. Should I simply follow my heart and interest to take such risk?
Ya take the risk . Don’t be afraid to take risks in life .
What does 995 mean ?
you should stay at G. Don't want any insufferable people here based on your line of questioning.
I am in the same boat although for a different role, have a FB offer and will most likely take it. I feel FB bad rep is over hyped and G bad rep is under hyped. I know a looot of people who work 996 at G and have been complaining quite a bit about work overload. Worst part is the work is not even that great. In addition there has been a mass exodus of senior execs at G recently and a lot of big bets imploding ( like stadia). Senior leadership seems to be faltering big time
If you think FB brand is bad, you will not like it here
Do people at FB think the brand is good? From a non technical viewpoint I mean.
sure, ask your friends who use FB, Messenger, Oculus, Instagram etc. There is utility in the app As for the OP: It's a dumb question since G has hired a bunch of FB people to be VPs and constantly tries to poach engineers here along with Stripe and other hot startups.
