GitLab TC

I'm looking at a role at GitLab, I love what they are doing and the people. I'm optimizing for interest and culture and willing to take a comp hit... but: I looked at their comp calculator, their top TC for a staff eng in the SF area is less than 320k, that's not even the avg salary for a senior SWE around here... (and if you work for gitlab from a lower cost of living location the salary goes down) I'm really curious how are they able to attract talent like this? TC 500k YOE 16

There's plenty of great senior devs who can't reverse a binary tree.

Some of these gitlab guys are traversing Merkle trees

I don't doubt the core skills of anyone at gitlab. I'm merely stating the obvious here: Leetcode performance in an interview situation does not always correspond to performance on the job. Also, often people simply don't switch for multiple years after going through the grind once. And especially not from what might be a good place to work for them.

The answer is: They can't attract *real* talent. The company has been hiring the cheapest "professionals" because they can't compete (pay). Turns out the new hires aren't as qualified as they seem on paper. I know about leadership positions open for more than six months with no qualified candidate in sight. I'm currently trying to get out of this circus because nothing gets done and their culture is laughable if you have any ambition. Once you start delivering, you'll be rewarded with more braindead work instead of something interesting.

Where are you thinking of going? I've been meaning to leave for some time now but too lazy to prep for leetcode interviews lol

@KfGu33 Not sure. I just opened my LinkedIn profile and was barraged by recruiter messages. The first question I asked: How much is the TC? Then I interview with whatever company answers significantly more and is worth my time. I'm currently interviewing with Shopify, Faire, Goldman Sachs, and a couple of small startups.
