Facebook E4 level YOE

How many years of experience does an E4 engineer typically have at Facebook? at how many years is it expected to be an E4 at facebook.

Facebook UWBE87 Jul 23, 2018

Expected for new grads (E3) to move to E4 within 2 years or they just start getting evaluated at E4 until they're weeded out

Would it be abnormal for someone with about 9 years experience to get slotted as a E4?

Facebook zkeviltsuj Jul 23, 2018

Yes this definitely would be abnormal

Amazon farcrie Jul 23, 2018

Are you sure this would be abnormal? I see people all the time with that many yoe coming in as E4. Internally is a different story.

What's the TC? Location?

NYC

Comcast kitna Jul 23, 2018

If you could let us know the TC, I recently got E5 offer in VA.

Its better to join at E4 and negotiate a higher comp.. Joining at E5 is risky and I see a lot of industry hires being non-performant at E5, in spite of having 7+ years of work experience. It takes time to understand the tools, process and culture of a company and there is no breathing room for that at E5. Strong E4 industry hires make to E5 after two reviews which is roughly 1 year.

No breadth of room? Doesn’t FB have ridiculously long bootcamp?

Blue apron CWxR36 OP Jul 23, 2018

I understand, my only issue is comp. it seems like taking a lower level will effect joining comp. My current pay seems above the l4 level and i typically expect an increase when changing jobs.

Facebook real_zuck Jul 24, 2018

It's kinda good to join as an E4. You have a clear opportunity for quick promotion at lower expectations. If you came in as E5 you'd be stuck with the comp you were offered indefinitely.

Blue apron CWxR36 OP Jul 24, 2018

are you saying that promoted e4s make more that lateral e5s?

Facebook real_zuck Jul 24, 2018

I'm saying if you have other similar offers then take this one because with your experience you can be promoted in like a year and make a lot more money. Whereas if you join as a higher level at another company you're stuck with the pay for a while.

Facebook NXob33 Jul 24, 2018

It will extremely hard to be promoted in 1year to E5.

Facebook real_zuck Jul 24, 2018

Not if he's underleveled

Blue apron soba Jul 28, 2018

Is it very uncommon for people to get promoted after only two cycles?

This happened to me too. I was very surprised. It would be like a down-level and pay was not exciting too. How did you end up proceeding ?
