Got offers from Facebook and Microsoft. PhD new grad, 0 yoe. Facebook, E4, Menlo park, CA TC 253k : base 160k, sign-on 75k, stock 300k (4 yr) EDIT: counter offer TC 266k : base 160k, sign-on 100k, stock 325k (4 yr) EDIT: after 2nd round of negotiation TC 291k : base 160k, sign-on 100k, stock 425k (4 yr) 10% yearly bonus Microsoft, L63, Redmond, WA (after negotiation using initial fb offer) TC 290k: base 165k, sign-on 100k, stock 400k (4 yr) 0-20% performance bonus I care more about personal/career growth at this stage. Thought accepting FB offer, but 30-40k TC difference here is significant to me, and it could be more considering tax and cost of living. questions: 1. Can FB E4 match my MSFT L63 offer here? 2. Is it worth joining FB even with that TC difference? (assuming FB don't match) 3. Any pros and cons starting with senior level at MSFT? 4. Which one you would choose (as a new grad) and why? Any suggestions are welcome! Thanks! #offer #career
Congrats. Were they specific on using either C++ or Java for interviews for PhD Uni grad?
Up to you. I was using c++.
Oh calm. Do they allow JS?
Starting at senior is incredible. It’ll take 2 years to get that at Facebook. I’d enjoy Microsoft for a couple years and switch back to FB with E5/6.
Choose FB, Msft L63's refreshers is like 10% of FB. FB TC will beat Msft after 2 years.
Can you share the work or the teams in both so we can give you the right direction.
AI platform (not Azure) @ msft Infra. (AI system) @ FB
I would go with MSFT. AI is the future and msft will leverage this to enhance its cloud/software/devices offering. For FB the impact will be only around its systems not for the whole world.
At fb you will probably learn more.
Just got the counter offer from FB TC 266k : base 160k, sign-on 100k, stock 325k (4 yr) Only increase 25k sign-on and equity. I thought at least they can raise the base. Should I ask for more?
You should take Microsoft offer. Your title won't change even if you don't perform that well. Besides Microsoft hardly fires people. So, it is best for you to spend 2-3 years at Microsoft. Then switch to other companies.
To answer your question, bases don’t really change too much within a level. FB works more on equity and sign on.
Facebook should be able to match.
You’re not considering California payroll taxes
Sorry I pressed Post accidentally. 290k in Seattle net salary is eq. to 320k in California. And then by lower cost of living, probably you’ll need an offer close to 400k to really match.
Thanks for the input. That's why I'm struggling. FB seems to be a better place for personal growth. But the actual TC difference could be more than 50k now, not sure if it would catch up in 2 years.
I’d take MSFT over FB—that’s an amazing offer for L63. Your TC at FB will outpace MSFT eventually due to better refreshers, but you can always leave before you hit the 4 year cliff. I’d work at MSFT for a couple years and then shoot for L5/6 elsewhere
Agreed. Work a few years at Ms and then leave for FB/somewhere else at E5/6 level.
Same here (on agreeing about MS!. Stay until all of your stock vests. Microsoft isn’t going anywhere - in terms of it dying anytime soon, but as a former Softie, the stock vests quickly and you’ll have a better WLB. Once your four-year stock block vests (in four years at MS), re-apply to FB or Google.
