Facebook E5 vs Dropbox IC3
Amzn Current SDE3 Yoe- 11yrs TC-295k (with stock appreciation) recently got promoted. Additional stocks on promotion is <peanuts Location: Seattle (DBX is virtual first now so doesn’t matter) FB Offer -E5 SWE - they already mentioned this is the max for me TC: 195 / 600 / 80 I know FB can give more but I guess my interviews didn’t go that amazing. Recruiter was nice but I’m worried about WLB and that matters to me a lot. Dropbox IC3 (negotiated for IC4 but they said no) Everyone I talked to were amazing including HM and work is pretty interesting too in one of the core teams TC: 210 / 580 / 50 They mentioned 15% cash bonus and approx 120k+ stock refresher every year based on performance. My opinion: I really like everything I have read about DBX on blind and it really feels like they care about employees. I know their stock is not doing well but I feel it will mostly go up given their growth has been consistent just coz CFO left there was some issues. Also I feel like I’ll learn more at DBX (just a hunch). FB on other hand I know is going to be better money-wise in long run but I hate all the WLB issues I have read about. Also prestige wise i think FB and DBX are same (correct me if wrong) What should I join considering these are final offers (don’t comment to negotiate i have already done that)? Also @dropboxer: how is the expectation and timeline for ic3 to ic4 ? **UPDATE** Accepted DROPBOX, really excited to join. Final Offer : 220 / 580 / 70
How about stay? Change from L6 SDE to L6 SDM, then get a M1 job at FB in one year. FB M1 shoud be around 550K

Is DBX IC3 a Senior SWE? And what is the refresher for meets all? This >$120k from the recruiter might be a deliberate attempt to quote the higher end of the refresher spectrum, instead of the middle of the road figure
Yes IC3 is Senior SWE in DBX. Also I confirmed that 120k+ is about right for meets expectation. It goes beyond for exceeds. Plus 15% is also like minimum if you are meeting all expectations. I feel I can do better in both areas.

New here. What does TC: 210 / 580 / 50 mean? 210k base with 580 stocks and 50k signin bonus? I would say FB. DropBox is nice and all but there tech may not be as mature. FB wlb is bad but you have the boot camp option to at least calibrate yourself. Not to say with FB and Amazon in your resume, you can practically go anywhere.
But where would you go after that?! This is all world has to offer

Fwiw, Dropbox comp is super competitive, as you're seeing. WLB is great, culture is strongly positive, office food in SF (when that opens up, if you're in the area) is the gold standard in the valley 😂 FB has the best tech, brightest engineers, biggest impact, biggest name/credz. But terrible WLB, questionable morale compass, promo bar is that much higher and longer, etc. No judgment, just factors to consider short and long term.
Yeah these are great pointers and i thought about these and I feel like “brightest engineer” wise DBX is not far behind. I felt everyone I met was really smart and i guess with the level of their interview difficulty it must stay that way. FB interviews were very LC driven, i did great in interviews because everything was from what i had practiced. (I did 350+ LCs) But DBX was so much fun and interesting, it felt like a collaboration and they were focused more on ACTUAL stuff that we’ll do in job like mutli thread and how you’ll handle multi tenet system n all. Overall after judging everything and the fact that refreshers n all are same I’m feeling more inclined towards DBX.

When you say your interviews with fb weren’t amazing, how exactly do you mean? When did you interview and what rounds do you think you didn’t do well?
I did great in all except system design where i feel i was not outstanding but good enough to get e5
System design is where a lot of people don't excel. Have you read Grokking the System Design Interview?

I agree about bottom of band, and told the same to SDM but got standard response - “we’ll definitely do better in April 2021” as if I’m going to wait. He is a great manager no complaints, but in case of comp, he screwed me over. I wish I knew that sde-3 will literally mean nothing instead make me switch then i would have put this prep effort earlier and not into getting promoted.

Let you look outside for next place
Facebook vest immediately, but Dropbox has 1 year cliff. I guess go to Dropbox if you want to rest and vest after 11yoe and bad wlb and hard work at Amazon.
Good point, but I plan to stay for atleast 3~4 years wherever I go so I’m fine with Cliff.

DBX refresher is amazing. My refresh was $230K last year (you need 4 rating though)

4 is exceed so basically performing at the next level. 2 consecutive 4s is basically a promos
Dropbox! But don’t rely on any DBX stock uptick. That market seems stagnated. Also once tech shuffles in the stock market and DBX will fall.
I agree with your point and thought abt this. My plan is to take my 50% stock grant every year and invest in MSFT APPL AMZN
Imo dbx have consistently growing revenue at 20% stock prices will follow in few years.
