What is facebook culture like currently? After the suicide case, is it getting better?
We have 50000 people. One suicide case is not an indication of anything, especially given the mental state of the guy. If he was on Amazon he maybe could have committed suicide even sooner. Who knows. Fb culture is just different than many other companies. It’s not “bad”. It’s just some people don’t fit. Pick the company that has the culture you enjoy, ez.
When you say ' some.people.don't fit' can you please tell us who can handle it well ? Then it will give an idea of who can go for it. Else its tough to determine
It’s hard to summarize.. people who like to coast, people who need to be hand held, people who expect everything being in order and structured around them usually struggle. If you are self driven, can see through bs and technically strong you’ll be just fine. Also being open minded, good team player and have strong people skills helps tremendously.
I've been around a little, I like fb culture. High performance is heavily rewarded and bullishit struggles - you usually hate it if you aren't good. I don't really work 40 hours, but usually have good performance. Most others I know that are consistently high performers also don't work crazy hours. Re other culture, perks are great, I like my colleagues. The only issue really is the external hatred towards FB. That makes it easy or hard depending on how much you believe in the mission.
Do you believe in the mission? Externally, someone telling me that they're making the world a better place by working at FB would be viewed as being a heavy Kool-Aid drinker.
I'm a data person - I ignore the rhetoric and weigh the good against the bad. The bad is that Facebook has acted irresponsibly with the data. It has put people's privacy at risk multiple times. It has enabled access to data to bad actors. The cavalier attitude and nonchalance of the Facebook leadership may have caused a regression in the leadership of the free world (at least temporarily). On the bright side, it has changed communication and social interaction forever and democratized social discourse. 15 years ago the narrative of what is important to people and what the society reads and discusses was set by the news and media exclusively, carefully curated. Today the news often follows the people - the MeToo movements, the Black lives matter, the ALS bucket challenge, the Arab springs and many others that are product of this new social culture and fabric may not have been the powerful movements that they are if not for the new societal dynamic. Facebook has also allowed people to maintain their relationships more easily. We are an increasingly mobile world - moving farther and farther away from where we were born and this was going to happen no matter what - Facebook helped us in part deal with this. So if I honestly ask myself the question of what we have done for the world - I feel, and hope rightly, that the latter outweighs the former. Though only history will tell. Regardless of good or bad though, the mission is to empower communities which I think is worthwhile - especially in parts of the world that are less fortunate.
When it gets better, TC drops
So it’s a choice between suicide and TC?
Yes, get rich or die trying
