Facebook vs MSCS

Finishing my summer internship at FB, and got a full time return offer for next year. I also have the option to convert it to an internship, and spend an extra 1 year at school to earn a masters (tier 1, think Stanford/MIT/CMU). On one hand, I've heard that a masters doesn't do much for your career as you start at the same level and pay. However, I also think there's no place to learn like school and I may have FOMO later if I don't do my masters. I'm also very interested in topics like ML and distributed systems and I think school may be the best place to explore them. The FB offer is 118/160/70 and I'm planning on leveraging that offer to hunt at Google and unicorns. Blind, what do you think is the best move? Should I do an MSCS or start work directly at FB?

You can do online master if you want to.

This, or even in person part time if you’re working in the same area as the university

he won't have time to do that if he goes to Fb

If you’re able to get into FB, the ROI for a masters is very little for you. Masters are usually beneficial for people who cannot get into FANG from the school they did their Bachelors in.

Would this be the case for SWEs interested in ML as well?

Microsoft x.com Aug 8, 2020

It depends on the individual. Self-driven people with strong analytical skills from a solid Bachelors foundation+brand and the ability to self-learn don’t need it. There is no one-size-fits-all answer to this question.

You already have an offer from fb, i would say join there then switch to google or higher after two three years if you like ... if in bw working at google/fb you get bored and some other field interests you then go for masters be it online or in-person ... atleast I wouldn’t let go of fb offer ... bery limited highrr opportunities from here say google etc but all are viewed at same level

I was in a similar situation, I decided to go for my 4th year master, mainly because I wanted to enjoy my college life more, and I didn't want to start working earlier. One other thing, I had return offer for every internship at several top firms, so I wasn't worried about getting offers...

Do you feel you made the right decision in retrospect? It's also going to be the 4th year masters for me and I'm not too worried about getting offers too (had offers from google, microsoft, amazon, uber, etc.). So pretty much identical situation!

Google hypsm Aug 8, 2020

I had a blast the 4th year at the college, both academically and socially. Master may help you for getting quant/trader at HF firms, high tech doesn't seem to matter much.

There is no place to learn like school,..... To learn how you can waste time and talent. Ms is Bs unless its in a very specific niche that will make you a specialist. General Ms is a waste of time..

Did u literally say MIT = Stanford = fucking CMU 😂

Facebook piedPIP OP Aug 9, 2020

Wanted to be ambiguous, but it's not CMU if that helps.

Citadel cita Aug 9, 2020

MIT seems comparable to CMU (for Bachelor at least)? Is CMU supposed to be another league above MIT?

Citadel HTyJ87 Aug 9, 2020

Try and negotiate at least your sign on before accepting

A masters is worthless

Cisco Persistant Aug 9, 2020

Is FB full time offer valid for a year? Go for masters in that case. Otherwise, start at FB full time.
