I’m tired of being an engineer. Life’s got no chill, only stress, deliverables and dealing with endless jerk interviewers asking leetcode medium/hard with tricks. Want to work on a role which require people skills, strictly behavioural interviews and work experience interviews. Allow me to coast, live life with no real hard deliverables like code. I’m fine with sitting in meetings 8 hours a day. Engineers have made their life tough. Absurd interviews with absurd expectations at work. Look at PM, Engineering managers etc. 70-80% of their interviews are subjective behavioural. Once they join, they can coast for year or two before people finding out EM/PM doesn’t know anything. All they have to do is survive politics. I’m leaning on PM/EM role as an exit. My brain cells can’t handle anymore. Sick of leetcode and spending time for work outside of working hours. Fking engineers, stop digging your own grave. Ask only easy leetcode with straightforward solution. Accept brute force solution. Interview needs to mimic reality. Nobody Time boxes you to come up with a best solution under 30 min or get fired. Back in the days, company used to take care of employees, didn’t use to fire, used to promote to next level for loyalty and tenure even if you don’t meet the bar for promo. It made sense to have tough interviews. But now, every company is firing left and right. Every company has pip quota then why the fuck do you need to have tough interviews ? Have easy interview, just check people can write a for loop, do palindrome and see if they have worked on relevant stuff and give the offer. Google interviews were so easy pre 2010. They used to ask text book data structure questions like how does stack works, explain BST , bubble sort etc. then dickheads joined and keep on inflating the difficulty level.
Agreed. become an engineering manager or pm . swe is oversaturated
I guess that’s what’s happens when everyone and their grandma jumped on the “learn to code” bandwagon.
Boom and bust cycle. White collar workers will have a tough decade. Blue collar workers will make more money and see extreme demand given lot of boomers have retired and country hasn’t produced real men working on real work. Everybody and their mother are boot camp graduates
I’m seriously considering learning plumbing, electrician or carpentering, flooring specialist With those hard skills, I know one can live wherever the fk they want and doesn’t have to rely on any company for money
Good rant. Tough reality is there’s more space for leetcoders than pm/em. I’m considering em but right now my IC level is too low for em. 😢 Tech sucks
Okay go be a pm or tpm if you think the job is cool idk why you have to cry about it
I laughed my ass off at “Look at PM, Engineering managers etc. 70-80% of their interviews are subjective behavioural. Once they join, they can coast for year or two before people finding out EM/PM doesn’t know anything. All they have to do is survive politics.” Boyyy you are in for a rude awakening when you switch over to PM. On the first day as a PM your boss grabs your ass and says “ab mein teri loo gha”
Most companies still ask LC for EMs. eg. Meta, Roblox, etc. You can get by as a TPM without LC (only sys design) but do you really want to be a TPM? You take a 25% pay cut and take shit from engineers
EM is better than PM. More chill role
Eh honestly really depends. I know a lot of EMs who have extremely stressful work lives. It depends heavily on your team. Also as of recently, a lot of middle managers are first to let go if they can consolidate the org tree to be smaller.
