My manager is handing out more responsibility to a l4 engineer. Not taking into account my interests or learning abilities. When I tell him I'm interested he comes with really irrelevant answers. I'm one of the top performers in my team.
It’s natural that an L4 would get more responsibility as they grow. Does this create a mentoring opportunity for you? Do you already have enough on your plate? Or do you feel like you’re being completely sidelined?
No, this is not the first time it's happening.
Set your own direction. Don't rely on your manager to hand you stuff to do. Work with the sr engineer on the team more closely. Also, are you sure you're a top performer!?

Responding about 3 months late. Hope you were able to work it out. If not, here are a few things to remember. Engineers are the strongest assets of any organization. You need to be super clear about what your needs are and if your manager is not able to provide for what you need ( looks like that is the case), move! Dont waste your time being stuck with a team where you are not seeing personal growth. Reach out to the AWE group, you will find a bunch of eager mentors who can help you better.
