Feeling disillusioned with FAANG due to elusive promo and no comp increase.

(No longer at EY - currently at Google) 2 years ago I started my job at Google in program management, and was ecstatic to receive my offer. It was substantially more than I was making in consulting with stock options to boot, plus not having to directly interface with rude clients was great. However, 2 years in and I feel disillusioned and unhappy with my career. I’ve gotten 2-3% annual raises which are kind of abysmal compared to inflation. Also I had to relocate for family to a lower COL, so I’m now making less now than when I started 2 years ago due to comp adjustment. My manager is generally nice and asks where I see my career going - truth is, at this point, I care more about $ and promotion to the next level than about the work I’m currently doing. I feel no true attachment or fondness for my team or the work I’m doing. My performance reviews are consistently middle of the road despite long hours, and I don’t feel motivated to attempt going above and beyond if a promo will continue to be out of reach. When I express interest in a promotion, I’m told 1) I need to be more confident 2) I need to become a true SME within my org 3) I need to do internal team/people work like planning happy hours. All of these seem a bit vague and subjective, and despite working towards them, I still miss the mark evidently. At this point I feel like changing companies is a better path to getting what I desire than vying for a promotion that may or may not happen. I’ve sent out about 115 applications since early February, but haven’t heard anything back except a handful of rejections. Wondering if anyone relates to this post and can offer advice. Worked at G and can relate. Honestly it has good brand management but internally kills your soul. I don’t know a single person who found any meaning, joy, and challenge in their work. And the company does not incentivize relationships — which is why no one feels fondly towards their team. Some of the smartest ICs I’ve met with the highest IQs but lowest investment in relationships, and then they get promoted to managers. G is mostly a lot of high school valedictorians past their prime trying to make their mark in an anonymous file. You’re not alone for feeling that way.

How are you liking TikTok? Did you leave due to feeling unhappy with G?

The market is that bad? With G on your resume, and you couldn’t get an interview?

Not yet, been searching for about 5 weeks.

When tech labor market is competitive for talent you get nice comp increases. When tech labor market is not competitive for talent you get bad comp increases. Has little todo with your performance.

L4-L5 promo should be straightforward and your manager is not doing a good job setting expectations/ finding opportunities for you to build your skills and deliver. A promo at this level is generally manager driven and not driven entirely by the IC. Can you look into changing teams?

Planning happy hours for L5 promo? Things are worse than I thought

Career growth happens when business is growing. Google unfortunately had a kind of stall and is just in protective mode of its core business.

Promos come easier when you find work you’re passionate about.

Google promotion system is fucking maddening Somehow I skated by the first few promos (up to 6) , thought I beat the system. But nooooo. now I have the exact opposite luck. Stalled out a f. For years Feel like I finally understood how to game the committees and get the right peer feedback. But now with GRAD where it’s all loose and manager / in-org based, it’s a whole new ballgame and I am way behind.
