Not sure why it is that i'm feeling this way, but i have an innate desire to leave Microsoft and go to Facebook... I don't know if it's about the money, prestige, potential, impact to my resume or what... I know this is my first problem, I need to understand why. It makes me more upset that I've interviewed a few times and failed, where my colleagues (equal levels at MS) are making it in. I just don't know what it is i'm doing wrong. I just completed phone screens but have a feeling i'll be getting the "Unfortunately mail" from the recruiter soon... At Microsoft I'm doing very well, L65 in Azure with a strong track record. I try to be humble, help out where ever I can, focus on impact, be as scrappy as possible, present well to LT, etc.... I've got a clear path to L66 and a lead position with my name on it. The work is also super exciting... With all that, I would trade it all for a lower level position at Facebook - WHYY god damnit? its really starting to take a toll on me... I will be seeking advice from my therapist, but also wanted to poke here to see if anyone else feels the same... thanks for the advice L65 YOE 13 TC 275k Edit: Thanks for all the great feedback everyone. I really appreciate it! I’m continuing to seek advice for my therapist on this. But I do appreciate all the perspectives from everyone here!
Lemme startle you a little: https://overemployed.com/ Come over here and join the Discord and get your mind blown away.
Is this a joke? People actually do this?
No joke. F* Facebook, get two remote jobs and diversify your cash flow and get to FIRE sooner. Also got ppl double interning.
Troll
No. I’m not
Because you are comparing your life with your friends who are making it in to Facebook? From your post feels like everything is going great for you at MS. Why go for something lower at FB because your friends joined FB? You probably are doing more meaningful work than what you might be doing at FB.
I’m trying to answer this question myself. No idea. Its really hard for me
It sounds a lot like you are (subconsciously) evaluating your own success, accomplishments, and competency based on social status. You tried to get into FB but failed while your friends got in, and, because you likely perceive FB to be more prestigious, you are deriving from this that because you weren't able to get in your accomplishments/abilities are inherently lesser than that of someone who did get into FB. If you could get into FB it would validate that your accomplishments and abilities are as good as you thought they were. Interviews are a flawed process, the best engineers don't always get into the "best" companies. It's not even really about being the best engineer but building the right product/business at the right time. It sounds like you have the opportunity to do the latter, and may or may not be in the former.
You need help. I know several people at FB in your same boat trying to get here, not even joking. It’s a crap shoot, that’s the point.
Really? People at FB not able to get into MS? Bullsh**
You’re mainlining that koolaid aren’t ya..
Your peers r probably better at LC than you. You can either give up your dreams like what everyone else is saying or you can grind harder
I’m trying. I joined Azure 4 years ago to gain the exp needed to make the jump
U can try other top companies if u just care about pay. That might relieve some pressure. But I can empathize, LC journey is long and hard
Really, Facebook? This place is ugh. Too much hacky code and PSC optimization. I'd recommend just staying at MSFT or switch to Google.
What? Says you from your walled garden
I'd rather have the WLB of Microsoft. I can promise you there's no "walled garden" (actually I lied, there is literally a walled garden on Building 21 😉).
Grass is greener on the other side. There are so many fb employees that would love to trade places with you. Real happiness comes from feeling grateful for what you already have.
I know about the happiness piece (from my therapist). FB would be my dream
🤷♀️ I tried
Except for the money, FB is absolutely NOT worth it. MSFT is a strong company to have on your resume. So get clear if you're after money. If not, you're simply bored. If it IS money - ask why. Coz there is never and end to desire.
Yes I agree. What lvl are you? Yoe?
L4/6 yoe - why does it matter?
Why exactly wanna go to FB? Because your friends went? What a fantastic reason.
I don’t know what it is. I think my friends going exacerbates the issue in my mind
But are your friends happy there?
On the off chance that this is neither a troll post nor an underhanded advertisement by facebook’s recruiters, I’d imagine it has something to do with your comparing yourself to peers (“It makes me more upset that I've interviewed a few times and failed, where my colleagues (equal levels at MS) are making it in.”)
No. Not a troll. I wish. Thanks for your feedback. I realize i need to stop comparing to others
Wow...words of wisdom from opportun. Sadly, applies to me too.
