My entire team was laid off, so it wasn't performance-related or anything. But I am finding that despite trying to foster a really positive attitude I feel kind of down and it's starting to come out through my interviews. Without work, I find myself forgetting what day of the week it is or wearing the same shirt for several days in a row. Does anyone have any tips for feeling better or boosting morale?
You should sign up for a class or do pro bono work. You need to feel productive and have goals. This is especially important when you are interviewing and they ask you what you've been doing while being out of work.
That's a great idea. I've actually gotten that question during interviews and I always think silently to myself like "Netflix? Sleeping? Neurotically checking my emails for replies?".. good idea to take a class and be productive.
Yes, online courses can be great, but you need to get out and network. Sign up for meet-ups that are in your interest area. There are tons of technical meet-ups in the Bay Area
I started consulting at 18yr old game testing. i am 30yr old now and took probably a dozen or so contracts in that time. Most contracts I would end on a friday and start the next job on monday. I thought always be hustlin was how to play it, but not for me! Now I see in life that is OK to enjoy time AWAY from work and enjoy myself without it. Learn to enjoy this time. Just because you are not working does not make you any less of a person. When people ask you what you do for a living do not respond *I am* a engineer at where ever but rather respond * I work as* an engineer at wherever, we are not our work, we are bigger as humans than work could ever define us to be.
Although I wasn't laid off but I knew that lay off is coming at my old company. Fortunately they retained me giving me a retention bonus but I left anyway. But until I knew about retention I was really scared and it was showing in my interviews. The reason I knew was because a sister team was laid off completely a week ago along with senior management. I was newly married (month back) and was on H1B visa. I came back to this news. I married my gf so she understood. I started failing onsites of the ones I thought would be pretty easy or safe choices. One thing I kept repeating to myself is I am good. I may not be good at interviews but I knew the guys with whom I went to grad school with. They are all working for top 4 companies. I just cut myself off for 3 weeks. Concentrated on preparing for interviews. When I was done. I had 3 offers. I ultimately went for the one with higher profile.
Build your confidence up. Small goals every day. Don't blow your was on an interview for a job you like if you aren't giving your best impression. Better to hold off on interviewing for now. Hang in there. You will be fine. I know what it's like.
