I did a bootcamp studying UX. Got a job at a startup which eventually got acquired by Faang. Worked there for 7 years and during the whole time I felt confident and got lots of help with my job. Sometimes it did feel like I coasted because when things got too difficult I have people on my team doing design critiques to help me. I spent 7 years as a junior designer. Now at my current company I'm a level above junior and already my manager puts me on PIP for things like color theory and inconsistent rounded corners on buttons which I think is BS since we're using components from a design system. I admit I didn't come from a graphic design background but I'm taking Coursera classes to fix that. Guess I just need to vent because being on a PIP means I'll lose my job soon. It'll be a little amount of time to collect money while job hunting.#ui/ux

Do you really feel special in your Tesla?
Everyone who says the lucky option is trolling you. Sounds like you have a bad manager and that can be disastrous.
Get a mentor. Find out your weak spots and work on your craft and confidence. Get control of your career. Sounds like you have a crappy manager but there are many of those out in the world.
People need to stop lying to each other. You spent 7 years as a junior and now you’re a mid-level designer on a PIP for what sounds like not understanding design basics. You probably need some more direct hands-on coaching outside of work if you’re unable to pick up things on the job.
Sounds like you got over leveled, and that is the fault of the person who hired you. It’s not a good look for a manager to make a bad hire and then have to manage someone out. However, you have concrete info on where you fall short and it is now your job to work on improving. You may feel like you’ve failed, but you haven’t. You’ve just learned a really hard lesson. It may suck for a while but, but you’ll find your way :)
Thanks for the empathy. Makes me feel less like a loser and that I need a growth mindset. 💪
I'm in the same boat. Can I ask which Coursera course you are taking?
Honestly, frequently needing critiques after 7 years as a junior designer says a lot.
sorry but if you spent 7 yrs as a junior, you probably aren’t great at design
I don’t understand how you survived faangs performance management. I’m genuinely curious. You make it sound like you couldn’t finish anything on your own and had no project ownership. I would definitely expect that after 7 years.
I’ve never heard of someone being a junior designer for 7 yrs. The fact that you’ve been in the field for that long and are still making basic mistakes means you don’t have impostor *syndrome*, you need to up-level your craft. Start paying attention to the details, don’t disregard them as some are suggesting as “just UI”. It sounds like you’ve got some gaps you’re aware of and working on them. Work hard to close those gaps quickly. That’s all you can do.
UI is overrated. Design systems brought us plug & play. Don’t beat yourself up. It sounds like you have a silly manager. I’m sorry you are going through this. Look for a company that knows the difference between UX and UI.
