While I was at Shopify last year I got a lot of recruiters in my dms with various different opportunities however I rejected them as I wanted to grow in my role at Shopify. I also was delusional about the Canadian tech market, was at 160k CAD TC thinking I was being underpaid. Now after being laid off I’m looking at 95-100k TC for the same roles at no name companies. I feel like shit that I rejected those companies, I would’ve been in a much better position if I job hopped than choosing to stay at Shopify and getting laid off. How do you guys cope with taking a big pay cut? I feel like I’m taking a big step backwards and I lucked out being in that position, it will take me so long to get back to that TC. TC 0K 3 YOE #layoffs
Wow..why so angry? Coming down on someone who is already feeling low, with some irrelevant comment. Hope your day gets better from here.
Yeah it sucks but you could have changed companies and still been laid off from that place instead. All the roles I’ve been looking at are about 25% lower in TC. The golden era is over for now.
It’ll be back in a year
Even with new opportunities, risks still exist or even larger (last in first out, no rapport no impact). I always connect with them on LinkedIn no matter I join or not, and I noticed many of my previous Hiring managers, interviewers are laid off..
I try to keep in mind that I can jump ship once the market improves
Once the market improves 😂😂😂
Op, we all make mistakes, things don’t always go per our plan. It is ok. Do what you have to do for now. Even if you compromise on the pay, try to make sure that you are learning something useful skill that you can build on in next role. Good luck
Have you tried applying for US companies?
Take the offer if it materializes and keep interviewing
I feel you man. I did the same thing and passed on higher TC roles being loyal to my company and trying to grow internally. Just to be laid off and left to fend for myself applying for roles reporting to roles that I turned down the previous year. Lesson learned for guys like us, we have to be opportunistic and put ourselves first.
You got to that salary before and you can do it again! It’s a bad market right now but things are cyclical and will swing back in favor of employees with time.
I feel you. 192K TC with 2 YOE. Had recruiters pinging me every week last year. Looking at 100-120K leads rn
This is what all these companies doing layoffs wanted to achieve
At 2 yoe, you're not even worth 100K.
