Most of us are always living for someone else. First 18 years, you’re sort of chasing your parents dream for you. College is about some self discovery, but you realize you need to graduate with a top job. On the job, you end up running the rat race. Promotion, partner, mortgage, kids, etc After 2020, my views changed. I don’t care about any of those. Happy to run my career slower and not chase every deadline. Do the most interesting projects, rather than the most rewarding ones. Not search for a partner, but just invest in myself by doing things I like and trying to learn new things.
I think most of us live for marriage and I am defying that atleast
Living for yourself vs family need not be mutually exclusive if you are in a family you love and that loves you. Looks like not the case for you.
The f’ed up thing is after I satisfied every requirement of others, I am a sloth 🦥 The problem is I never did anything for myself and now it feels wrong to do something for myself.
I am the boy who lived.
Indians, even the ones born in the US, tend to be conformist to societal expectations. Run your own race, bro.
As a General category caste person, (but not financially in better condition anyway) neither me or any of my family members got special reservations in higher studies nor government job, so I am the only one doing well compare to my brothers. So apart from parents, I support families of my brothers as well. It is all grinding for me. I know there are many such families in India particularly in General category. This is never ending cycle for general caste people.
The first important thing is to know self . Try to do the things which you like the most . Try not to do anything due to peer pressure/society. Having a balance between helping others and living for self is helping me. Helping others give me immense satisfaction. 1. Education & Marriage of two sisters. 2. Education loan for self. 3. House construction for parents 4. Paying for brother's education. 5. Helping someone needy in matter related to education. But on the same time I am trying to live my life and do the things which I like most. 1. Traveling 2. Reading 3. Eating
If you’re chasing your parents’ dreams because you want to do that, it would qualify as living for yourself

I’m 29 and I just realized this. I am content earning 300-350k for the rest of my career. Not gonna chase promotions or more higher TC but currently focusing more on other aspects of my life.
What's it like working for apple? I'd kill to be in ur position 😅
Good job! I figured this out when I was 31 and my happiness skyrocketed. I still send money back home, etc. but, I don’t stop my life for what other people expect.
