Role : Senior Software Engineer (Full Stack) TC : ~145k (Base : 105k, Profit Sharing ~12k, Bonus: 21k, 7% 401k match) Location: North Carolina 6 YOE Thinking of moving to a LCOL (Low cost of living) location from the Bay Area. How is this for an offer in North Carolina? Housing prices are literally 1/4th of that in the Bay. Looking for expert opinions 😅 Will I be doing a mistake if I decide to move to NC? And how is FIDELITY INVESTMENTS as a company? (work culture, pay, learning opportunities, career growth etc.) Can move back to the bay in couple of years if things turn out bleak. Current TC: 170k #engineering #swe #faang #leetcode #LCOL #interview #salary #tc #advice #career #fidelity #bayarea #base #bonus #Compensation #stock
How were the interviews? Do they ask leetcode questions?
There was a coding question, but very straightforward easy leetcode level. There was only a single technical round much like the initial tech screening that we have for the companies here in the bay. More questions were from past experiences.
Is 21k a one time joining bonus ? Or every yearend bonus ?
21k is a yearly bonus
Also thinking of moving to Raleigh-durham for similar reasons. Had a Fidelity recruiter reach out locally. Interested to hear about the corporate culture from current employees? OP what was your opinion of Fidelity during the interviewing process?
There was just one technical round with two interviewers which lasted about an hour. They mostly asked about practical situational questions from my experience and expertise as mentioned in the resume. Hearing that the WLB is great at Fidelity when compared to that in the Bay where it's a never ending rat race.
Profit sharing and 7% can’t be really counted towards tc .. and the bonus 21k is also tricky. Technically your tc is 126k and for your questions about work culture - if you want to coast and have minor incremental $$ changes yoy .. it is the place Learning ops- fidelity’s got good budget for training and learning so should be good Career growth - it is there title wise but not so much money wise. Also you need to know right people to make your case like any other org. iMo, you can do better in RDU area. There’s lot of Bay Area companies presence .. try for that .. fidelity stamp will not get you back to Bay Area
is that 21k bonus guaranteed?

Depending on your skills and experience, you can do much better in North Carolina. If the goal is to move to North Carolina and cut expenses, you'll be better off getting a remote position with a silicon-valley company. There is a higher chance that you'll increase your TC past 170k and also reduce your cost of living. The Charlotte Metro and the Raleigh-Durham area are great places to live in NC. If you're not moving to either of these two areas, then it could get weird. TLDR: Consider moving to NC without reducing your current TC.
It is Durham, NC. The housing prices seem affordable. I could afford all my expenses with the amount that I pay as rent now :D
Doesn’t your salary reduce/change/revise based on where you work from ?
