Filed a complaint with HR against my manager. Got told to keep my mouth shut.

I just joined a team as a data engineer. I have an abusive manager that everyone on the team hates that yells and is extremely passive aggressive. I've only been at this position for 4 months, and I waited until my 90 day review came out to file a complaint. I recently got my review, and it was good so I thought I would be valued enough by the company to not get yelled at for nonsense. I got top 5% rating in productivity, and the rest were pretty good as well. Mostly top 25% in everything else. This gave me a false sense of security. I am on a team of data engineers who pretty much only know SQL, and they are very lacking in Python programming. The other new hire and I are actually the best Python programmers on the team (lol), and I even constantly help level 2 and senior engineers on the team (keep in mind they are SQL engineers). EDIT: I forgot to mention that the company is making a hard change into using Python and Pandas from only using SQL Server. This is why SQL engineers are having to program in Python now. I felt very confident about my worth to the company, so I finally decided to complain to HR and asked if they could talk to my manager about me getting yelled at. The call went as bad as I could of imagined. She lured me in by fake agreeing with me at first letting me vent my problems. I thought she was on my side. This all changed when she said "Well what did you do to make him yell at you"? I explained multiple situations where this happened, and she constantly told me that I was overreacting and he couldn't possibly have done that. She told me HR would not get involved, and if there is a problem they expect me to handle it with my manager instead. I fucking hate start ups, lol. I'm just glad I didn't lose my job. I need to get the fuck out of this job ASAP now, but of course there is a recession going on. Does anyone have any tips on how to get a new job right now in this job market as a junior? I imagine that if I don't stay here I am completely fucked. I'm looking for advice. Can anyone help coach me on what to do? I know everyone will say LeetCode, and I will say that I'm absolutely crushing the hell out of that. I will have 100 problems solved by the end of tonight. (I'm at 98 or 99 right now). Thank you in advance for your advice, Blind! TC: $60K YOE: 4 months (also 2 internships if that helps)

Let it be a lesson. HR is not your friend. They are there to protect the company.

I knew this very well, and I was still stupid enough to think they care about a very productive junior engineer, lol. That performance review really had me on a high horse a little bit, and I've been cut back down to nothing now.

I think you should def find a new job, but go out with vengeance. When you accept the new role and are about to leave, play real nice and take a bunch of work with hard deadlines. Then when the manager is super dependent on you, don’t deliver and make him look bad and quit. Let all these mofos burn in hell.

Yeah, well finding a job with 4 months of experience during a recession sounds almost impossible. Fuck My Life. I also don't have family in the US, so I'll be on the streets if I lose my job.

Which won't be too bad I guess. I can still LeetCode at Cafes even if I am homeless. Then I can probably get good enough over time to compete even in this recession market.

$40k is less than those shitty revature type contracting gigs I'm pretty sure wtf

Is this a typo? I make $60k not $40k. I might even apply to revature.

Philips Pjammies Aug 5, 2022

Oh I misread it as 40k. Also try to care less about work and work interactions. My first job I poured my heart and soul into and got upset over work politics and arguments too. In the end who cares you work to get paid then you change companies. Just look for other jobs and try to not pay any mind to your shitty manager

Word to the wise, HR is never on your side. Regardless of whether it’s a start-up or a large company.

Why is this? Why do they protect corrupt managers who cause problems? My manager has been here for 8 months, and 4 engineers have left a team of 6 in that time period.

Generally, HR is there to protect the company’s downside risk. The only situations I’ve heard HR, or more correctly ER (employee relations) step in are in cases of discrimination and/or sexual harassment. Short of that, they’re unlikely to do anything. The fact that HR even asked you what you had done to cause your manager to yell is very sus. The answer there should be “are you implying there are situations where yelling at a direct report is within company policy?”

1. HR is rarely your friend. In some companies, they have moral values. But most places are not like that. So don’t assume they will help you, def not within 4 months into the job. 2. If you are in a startup, HR there is just a “hiring helper”. Also, startup atmospheres are mostly stressful and you need thick skin to survive. 3. Don’t be a softie… if you get yelled, don’t be silent and don’t yell back either. If you want to fight, be smart, slowly tear the target down. This requires practice on how to keep calm and use proper arguments to get the boss to contradict himself. This is very hard to do for most people. So stick with my 2 advice above.
