I am 6 months into Amazon and I have been working day in and day out and completed 2 projects. In my meeting my manager told me that I have done very good work in past few months but all I see is rating "Achieves". I am very disappointed đ I don't understand if I have done good work, why did I get "Achieves", is it because I am too new? Even my school grade was 4/4 from a top school.. I don't think I can recover from this utter disappointment now đ I am literally crying Also I am l4, so most probably getting no raise this year because my TC for l4 already decent. 2021 TC- 170k, base -130k 2022 TC at current stock price - 180k đ˘ #amazon
Got an exceeds and a promotion đ
In 6 months?
If they gave you an exceeds after only six months, it would mean they hired you too low.
I already have 3 yoe prior to masters from a tier 1 company. But I was in school so the recruiter had put me up for l4 interview.
You canât use 3 months and YOE in the same sentence. Are you applied science?
Op, this is a question to your manager not Blind. Talk to him/her and find out why you are given this rating. Also, working day in and day out doesnât mean anything. Performance is measured against results and impact.
I have only received good reviews so far. Deliver results (As I mentioned, completed 2 projects), ownership and bias for action were my top strengths. My top growth point is "learn and be curious"- the most vague thing ever... nobody can stop learning and being curious.
Achieves is a good rating at Amazon. It's a tough place to work.
Whatâs your gender? Itâs hard for you to have impact in 6 months as compared to others whoâve been there for an year or more
Why is gender relevant here? I am female btw
Reason I ask, why are you crying?
I also started at Amazon 6 months ago and got âachieves.â I think it has to do with the fact that putting âexceedsâ is similar to saying you are ready for promotion. Do you think you already have the domain knowledge to perform as a SDE2 right now? For me, I still have a lot to learn about the space my team is working in. Iâm guessing you are in the same boat, but I could be wrong. Also, you probably havenât had enough time to make enough impact yet đ¤ˇââď¸
Yes I do not have all the Amazon specific knowledge about their internal tools and infrastructure yet. That even SDE2 hired 6 months back doesn't even have. If you are asking me the general skill set required for a SDE2, I would say I have that. I was up for a promotion in my previous company but I left to go for masters. Worst decision of my life.
The issue is that it doesnât matter if you have it, but if youâve shown it within the 6 months. As a manager maybe they even see that you are technically capable, but have you been also currently meeting nontechnical bar for SDE2? For example outside team influence and mentorship of other members within the team? Itâs a stupid system, but it is what it is
You are doing a good job. Keep it up and maybe you will get promoted in another 6 months, or in 1.5 years if shit hits the fan. You have just joined Amazon, and regardless of how much you have been working, you probably were a liability on the team your first 3 months simply because you were onboarding (even the best of us were). Chill the f out and donât wear your ambition on your sleeve. Focus on being a good engineer and you will do just fine.
Thanks for the kind words. But I have never received a 2/3 or a 67% score.. I just can't bear with it at the moment. BTW I had completed my first project in my first 3 months which was pointed out as 1 of the 2 project wins of my team by my manager for that quarter in the sub org all Hands!
Seriously you are in for a world of shock if achieves makes you this upset. Life is not fair, esp at Amazon.
No one gets Exceeds at Amazon with only 6 months on the job. Just from the fact that there isnât enough data. Your colleagues have 12 months worth of data and projects. Youâre fine.
If you started just 6 months back your review is most likely based on just the first 1-2 months of your work since Forte is completed back in Jan. You are just hearing about it now. That is usual process. So, dont be disheartened with the rating. Talk to your manager and find out what the expectations are for an exceeds so you can work towards it next year. They should be able to clearly explain every feedback point in your Forte.
Check out other posts on this, a high achieves is better than a low exceeds from what I saw.
How is high Achieves better than low exceeds, do you know?I don't even know if I am high Achieves.
Only 20% or so get exceeds. Do you think you are better than 80% in your level and role? Looks like you're not.
I definitely think I am better than 80% in my level. I am only a l4.
When youâre hired, arenât you >50%? So youâre on the high end of achieves?
