I know guys in investment banking, private equity. Their salaries dwarf ours, their career progression is nothing compared to even FAANG. It’s somewhat comparable to quants I guess, but it’s just a whole different level of money, dudes making 850k in their mid 30s, it’s ridiculous. I used to tell myself oh those guys work 60+ hours a week, us dorks over in big tech can just slack and work 20-30 hours a week, so in a sense we’re the lucky ones. And then layoffs happened. And then every company started following the Bain/McKinsey strategies of “performance culture” and now we all work 50-60 hours a week too (I’ve probably been doing 70 most recently). This job isn’t even worth what I’m being paid anymore I work so much. I’ve stopped caring about money to be quite honest.
850k in mid 30s is definitely possible at FAANG+
Maybe a few years ago but people don’t really get promoted anymore. They just get downleveled if they try and switch companies.
That's just the market right now. Wait out the market. Simple.
If you are in this field for only $$, then you are already here for the wrong reasons
Yes, I agree. I’ve realized how much I hate it here. But the fact is, up until a few years ago you literally could make a ton of money and barely work. Of course that was never gonna last and I was too stupid to see that
🐑
You realize a bunch of banks shed a ton of associates/VPs and that MBB had a ton of cuts, right?
I know only 3 friends who work in IB. They work 50-60 hour weeks way before they make anything even close to 850K. 1 had a heart attack at age 38. 1 got divorced because wife got fed up of his permanent irritable nature due to always being stressed and having no time for her. And she extracted a really good amount from him as she left. 1 does casual flings because no woman can stand him (many come initially for the money and then leave when they can’t stand him) and I recently learnt he got Hep C. Don’t know how. Maybe there are others who work 60-70 hour weeks, are in great health and have great family lives. But I haven’t known any such folks personally.
50% of marriages end in divorce and being able to even have flings with women way more than most guys get
Does an extra 200k improve your life? For me, my habit won’t change. I don’t think I can bring myself to buy a first class plan ticket even if I can.
but u r not making 650k now right, op talking about 850k folks. The more they make the less likely they even need to pay for first class, probably flying it for work and racking up tons of points for first class vacays
You are right. That's why no one should work a minute more than 40 hours/week. What's the worst they'll do? Fire you?
"I want to make a load of money and barely work. Now I have to do some proper work for it, so I'm jealous of the investment bankers and now I'm sad." You sir, are pathetic.
Aptly summarized. If there is a mental health issue please seek help OP. Your train of thought makes zero sense.
“Their salaries dwarf ours”. I’m in my mid 30s and make a lot more than that, so do many of my colleagues.
Dayum! What do you do?
PM, but nothing special about me - Op just appears to not understand the FAANG pay scales.
Problem with tech is jobs get offshored too much to 🇮🇳. Salesforce pays 🥜 because the Hyderabad office has grown 10x since the pandemic began. On the other hand folks in IB and PE don’t want their companies turning into currycel hubs so they only hire chads in NYC earning 7 figures
All the idiots here clapping like seals at the "push for diversity" and "let more immigrants come" initiatives, while the big wigs laughing as they watch the salaries for us drop as a result of the increased supply.
Lol tell me you know nothing about finance. There a bunch of Indians in finance, they’re just not directly from India though.
A person who has to work 60-70 hours a week isn't rich. There are 168 hours in a week, you sleep for 49 of them (if you're healthy). So life is 119 hours. If you sacrifice 60-70% of this to work and commuting along with your energy your life is on hold. Time is wealth, having no time to read, relax, experience nature, think beyond work etc. Is pathetic. Money is no compensation for a wasted life.
Techies waste their lives more than anyone else. Ever hear of that weirdo techie kid who can’t even land a date? Yeah that’s 99% of us. On the other hand 99% of IB PE folks can land foursomes whenever they want
Maybe that's 99% of y'all at Google. I guess that's why you make the big bucks.

Nobody can help you because you have a loser mindset
You’re avoiding the things I’ve brought up because it makes you uncomfortable
I’m not whining. You are. I’m comfortable in my role, in my WLB, in the opportunities I’ve got so far and in the time I’m able to spend around family. You only seem to want money. You’ll always be unhappy. Sorry.
