Free speech - India vs US.

While India and the US call themselves the largest and oldest democracy, a seldom acknowledged fact is that free speech rights in India is no where close to that of the US. While India calls itself a democracy, a sedition case was filed against over 50 persons for writing an open letter to Modi criticizing the government. https://thewire.in/rights/sedition-case-for-open-letter-over-180-personalities-endorse-statement-condemn-charges Something like this is not even imaginable in the US! Kudos to the US for being the real democracy with its amazing free speech rights!

I don’t think anyone ever said India had free speech. Who are you arguing with?

Neato Robotics mark5 Oct 8, 2019

You have free speech in India if you belong to the majority. Period.

Microsoft techladki Oct 8, 2019

Read the comments. Lot of Indians who can't even acknowledge that

F5 Networks RRA Oct 8, 2019

Just wait for the Indian nationalists to come out and flag this to oblivion.

Microsoft MinisDad Oct 8, 2019

I thought India still has slavery system

Kudos to India indeed. There is power of free speech. However let’s remember what Spider-Man said “with great power come great responsibilities” Comparison to the US may not be very apt. The US system to bipartisan democracy is quite different. Am surprised that freedom speech isn’t as powerful.

Microsoft techladki Oct 8, 2019

The point still stands that India doesn't have the same free speech rights as US!

Uber MuthuSwamy Oct 8, 2019

Well .. When current potus was elected in the wh.. all the protests and clashes which happened.. you forgot that right? Wh supremacy became a known thing in us and so on so forth.. The people above are hypocrites who come out of woodwork when it’s comfortable for them.. Once in a while such leaders are needed to put back certain section of society back in place and remind them who is in charge..

Microsoft techladki Oct 8, 2019

It is not clear what you are saying. On average, free speech is way more in the US than India. Are you saying that's not the case? When was the last time sedition was filled in the US for criticizing?

Microsoft techladki Oct 8, 2019

I hate saying this as my family is Indian:- On social media and elsewhere most Indians praised the sedition charges. On the other hand, most Americans (except for the recent antifa) are very tolerant of speech they disagree with. Even burning the American flag is legal. Indian society on the other hand is uncivilized and emotional --there have been many incidents of people begging assaulted for not standing up for the national anthem. The average Indian has a very primitive mindset and isn't capable of respecting free speech. Not intending to be hateful of India, but I'd rather be an honest "anti national" than a dishonest patriot.

Uber MuthuSwamy Oct 8, 2019

Please don’t generalize. The average Indian even on h1b here has same mindset as a unskilled rikshawala in India..

Leave the family and do something better in life than whinning

Unfortunately this is starting to become very imaginable in the US.

Microsoft techladki Oct 8, 2019

True, but India is still way behind. US won't fall so behind anytime soon

For now, the trends are disturbing here though. Never seen this in my lifetime. The most recent cohorts of college graduates seem to have been educated under a completely different set of assumptions versus those that came before them.

Indians are like Neanderthals! The culture is not advanced enough to understand thinks like free speech!

Microsoft techladki Oct 8, 2019

Lol! Hate to say it, but you are correct.

Bloomberg dopehope Oct 9, 2019

Leave it bro, just take care of yourself. No need of charity

Intel JmsIngram Oct 8, 2019

I want absolute free speech in India. Will OP take responsibility if someone make a cartoon like Charlie Hebdo? The law in place was created by British and was used from the time of 1st Govt of India. Free speech comes with a cost and India can't afford it. The law is the problem not the person who filed the case. Let's abolish the law.

Librandus forget that modi supporters and rss workers get killed on regular basis. Sharing only this story tells how biased you are. FIR was launched under same “freedom” that you are preaching so hard here. This is just a part of formal processing. Let the court decide and lets wait for it. Also, stop being hypocrite.

Microsoft techladki Oct 8, 2019

Wtf are you ranting about? OP just said US has more free speech than India, which is true. Period. The point being a similar case cannot be lodged in the US sure to better free speech. Not sure why this was so difficult to understand!

Informatica weworkce Oct 8, 2019

This msft guy has no idea what is an FIR. Let me dumb it down for you. The full form is First investigation report. It does not tell shit about anything. Stop behaving like there is already a verdict. As if US don't have cases which are tossed by judges.
