Friend was asked salary during negotiation, and instead of not answering like she should have she "embellished" it. By embellishing it I mean adding pension match, including the starting bonus and including the insurance value. This added 10% to the base - which is what she usually answers when people ask her for total compensation. EDIT: The friend was asked to provide paystubs to verify start/end dates, which she did Likelihood of offer getting rescinded?
“Friend”. I could very well be off base, but is that even available in background checks? Seems very granular.
She provided paystubs to verify start/end dates
No. Companies that conduct background checks usually ask candidate to redact salary information from W2s or pay checks they provide. Pay is considered confidential information.
It’s against the law to ask for current salary info in California.
What if the company is in California but the candidate is in another state?
Then federal law would apply, but California would illegally think its does too.
What's to stop someone from editing the salary section of their paystub? Lol
In the future never talk about current comp. Say this is the TC I need to leave my current role. Then you are not being dishonest, you are sharing what you want.
This is a stupid American practice! Why ask for people’s current salary to gauge their worth? God bless Canada 🇨🇦
Canada wishes it was 1/5 the country of it's southern neighbor. Enjoy your tiny benefit for people who can't negotiate. And good luck every getting rich in a socialist republic.
If you think it’s okay for people to be asked of their current pay, then something is wrong. What happened to privacy? Oh sorry! That doesn’t exist in the US of A! God bless Canada 🇨🇦
Even if you added 10% that’s let’s say somewhere between a few to 20 thousand. Is it really noticeable? It could easily be difference between the top and bottom end of your pay band. Who’s doing math.
Don't lie and you'll have nothing to worry about... just learn to negotiate.
10% is easily accounted for bonus, perks, spot bonus, free meals, commute cost difference, etc. Don't fret over 10%. You think the potential employer was being honest about the offered salary range, I don't think so. If you ask them the pay median for people in that range, they'll likely never answer that or give ball park but never accurate. Eventually what they offered stands and its never ever contingent on past salary on paper. Chill.
The only time they "tell you" is when you try to negotiate above their range 🤣
Paystub will confirm base salary. They can only confirm TC if they request W-2. Internet pages claim some background checks require those, but none of he places I’ve worked have asked for them.
