It’s so stupid to ask questions with tricks or code with optimal solution with no flaws in time-boxed env. Having conducted several interviews & been through many. I can confidently say that interview performance!= performance at work. Many people who are good at work and area of domain they work in are screened out by ruthless leetcode. Many leetcoders just slide in the roles where they aren’t a match for job requirements and skill set and often are drag for the whole team’s productivity. Not sure if you have noticed this. Good old days of asking questions relevant to the role and past experience has been dumped with standardized tests
Leetcode is great. It's true not all who are good at leetcode are good on the job, but it is true that 100% of people who suck at leetcode suck at computer science. I guess it's up for debate about how important computer science knowledge is for being a software engineer, but I'd take the side of "very important".
People who suck at leetcode doesn’t equate to CS either. There’s no correlation between leetcode and Cs fundamentals either. Even if you have good DS knowledge. Even then it doesn’t mean you would be able to solve leetcode in time boxed env. Leetcode is just a skill which require constant practice and memorizing patterns which means one is spending more time practicing for interviews while not focusing on the work or going in depth in the field. My beef is one shouldn’t be required to go through so much practice just to crack interviews. Interviews should be easier and more focused on past experience & requirements for the new role so that one doesn’t need to prepare for the interview
“it is true that 100% of people who suck at leetcode suck at computer science” This is so wrong
I’ve seen hires pushed through for candidates that failed their coding interviews, and they’re always a drag on team productivity. They often want to become the idea person or architect or pseudo product manager or scrum master, and are generally pains in the arse. Leetcode literally gives you a path to pass those interviews.
Have you seen any other role being tortured like this through standardized test?
I think standardized tests would be more like the bar exam, or medical licensure exams. If you're frustrated with leetcode, take a break and try Project Euler, or check out exercism.org.
A lot of companies don't ask leetcode questions. They just don't pay a lot. Take your pick.
This is why frustration is building up. Because just to switch one needs to prepare 4-6 months every time while performing at the current job as well
