Current pay: 103k Yoe: 7years Just got a job offer from GM last week with a base pay of 105k and joining at 7B level with 13% bonus options from team GM. This is obviously below what I expected. How do I go about negotiating up to 120k? #interview #auto #generalmotors #ford #fiatchryslerautomobiles

Women, help me understand why this is inspirational
It is fair I think. 7B for 7yoe is pretty good. Midpoint for 7B is 109k, but 7yoe is definitely on the early side of getting 7B. It is much easier to move up in pay within a paygrade than to promote up a paygrade. So if you perform well in the next couple years you can shoot up quickly, 7B max is 139k. 120k would be a reach I think, maybe 110k is in the cards.
Just got a competing offer from a Bay Area company with a good amount of equity and average pay. Do you know what the range for a 7a grade is? Or would that be too much of a stretch. It doesn’t help that I can’t reach my recruiter since they’re on vacation right now. Edit: forgot to mention that I wouldn’t like to move but would in a pinch.
7A mid is 122k, don't know about max. I think there is no chance for 7A with 7yoe. 7A is where most engineers retire at unless you promote into leadership roles. 7B is already pretty quick IMO. If you started at GM, you would be a 5, 1 year to get 6B, 3-5 more years to get 6A, 3-5 more years to get 7B. 3 years at each level is on short side. You can really only go faster if you are fast tracked. You won't get fast tracked until you work and get on the good side of upper management. So yeah I think the level is good, pay is so-so. Since you have a decent level but below midpoint, you can move up within that range quickly. I don't think GM will budge too much from initial offer from what I have seen, maybe 5k if anything. 105k isn't bad IMO for 7yoe especially with the 7B (7 gets higher bonus than 6, so that counts for something too). You can maybe ask for signing bonus.
