Will probably make another post like this closer to start date, just want to get opinions. I’m a recent college grad whose Amazon start date was moved back from January to July. I’ve been working as a SWE at General Motors for 9 months now, which will be 1 year by the time I start at zon. I’m wondering if y’all think I should stay at GM or go to Amazon. Some info for comparison below. GM: Good WLB Good team TC: 95k Amazon: TC: 175k Is the TC and potential growth worth the potential long hours/pip anxiety/layoffs? Thanks #swe #softwareengineer #amazon #generalmotors #gm
Go to Amazon! You'll learn so much and you have the time to grind right now.
Id go to Amazon. It’s the perfect time in your career to take a bet like that
This
GM is going bankrupt. Amazon may be rough but GMs future is bleak. Consolidated and bankrupt this decade rip 🪦
Nah we won't. Why would we go bankrupt?
Inventory is piling up. You don’t have the necessary operating margin to switch to EV. Rip
I’ll play devil’s advocate and tell you to stay at GM. It has its’ flaws, but I’d rather be making 🥜 at GM than suffering at Amazon, even for that TC increase. You’ll either be PIPped out after a year or if you’re unlucky, a hire to fire after 6 months. You may be laid off or filtered out due to having to RTO! Ignore people telling to “just grind, bro” and take my advice. You certainly don’t want to waste your youth slaving away for a brutal company like Amazon, and you can always move to a better FAANG company later on. TC: 90K, never worked at Amazon and never will
Actions you take today impact your future. ROI at Amazon will be much higher than GM.
In this market, Amazon doesn’t mean much. OP is better waiting it out for a better opportunity and going to a better FAANG. Also consider that, OP would have to immediately justify his value as a new grad, which would lead to an immediate PIP as Amazon (and Amazonians) has a particular bias against juniors in this market. Unless OP’s going to a business critical team, the ROI for joining Amazon is too low considering the insane amount of risk he would be taking in joining on at this time.
You will learn so much and it's almost double your current TC. It's worth it for that alone.
Amazon. In a year job market will improve and you can bounce
First FAANG or another recognizable tech company on your resume is invaluable. Just last at least 9 months.
You are young, take risk and you can always come back to GM.
I would do it just to add it to your resume, GM will probably be open to hiring you back in 1-3 years.
