Lately been feeling a bit unhappy working at blizzard. I want to switch to a different gaming company but wanted to ask how others in the industry felt about their company’s culture. What are some strengths and weaknesses about your company?
Is pay good at big gaming companies? Not expecting FAANG level but is it at par with some good companies?
Lol, no
Can confirm, no :)
I can’t say our work is more fun but it pays better.
Is game dev work even fun? I’ve never read anything that says so.
I came from games and it can be fun and it’s more likely to be fun than non games. There are shitty parts like any job but if you are a gamer, you pretty much enjoy making a gaming experience and you get to solve interesting problems like “how do we make AI scale with difficulty?”
Any game company will have sketchy employment. You never know if your company will lay you off even if it makes bank (eg Activision). Even once amazing studios are in risk of shutting down (BioWare). You might have better lucky in a game team in a tech company like Google, Microsoft or Facebook, or tools company like Unity or Unreal. Nintendo probably won’t lay you off but they also won’t pay you much either. Although be careful of Amazon’s game studio, they don’t seem to know what they are doing... no games released yet? Anyone actually using Lumberyard?
Most of activision’s layoffs were for support staff. They’re actually hiring more devs iirc
Yeah Amazon games seems like a mess from a product perspective. Games have generally all been cancelled
What’s making you unhappy at Blizzard?
Been thinking about leaving ever since big layoffs...it's been feeling a bit empty I guess
