Gap in the PM resume

So so frustrated with the job market right now. Got laid off in April and still unable to land anything. Let alone a job, it’s even hard to get interviews and go past the HM screen. Completely baffled at what do, and getting anxious about the unconscious bias in Hiring Teams about gap in the resume. How are you all thinking about it?

This depends on the geolocation. Where are you located?

US. I am a visa holder. Was on H1B, but now on Wife’s H4.

In India this used to be a problem. In US I didn't even get asked about 7 month gap in my resume.

Is the gap only from April and caused by not being able to find the right job for you? That shouldn't be considered a gap imo. You are still searching. Wtf is this gap bias. I'm kinda perplexed.

Yes, just from April. Gap bias is if I could not find a job in X months, then something is wrong with me. Also, not to mention, some HMs still assume laid off people had performance issues.

Any HM that assumes that, you probably don't want to work for. It isn't like you got laid off during a bull market. Just say you got laid off a few months ago, took a month to recharge and are now gearing up to find a new role. Even in good times, from interview-> offer takes like ~6 weeks, so 3-4 months isn't that long lol. Someone in my network got laid off from FB as a PM In February and just took a Sr role at C1 this past week. it takes time to find roles lol. Last thing is- If you're getting calls from the recruiter and getting to the HM screen, then it isn't your resume. Any discussion with HM on background is just the brief tell me about yourself then you dive into the case/behavioral questions.

Maybe go for roles you’re over qualified for then aim to get promoted quickly.

Yeah, will start doing that.

L65 here, took me 4 months of frustration, took a really low paying job, no fancy title but report directly to VP in small company. literally 50% paycut, L61 would have better TC. Gives a bit of peace & money, to survive a year until market picks up. Sometimes worry, that I'll never make it back, but you gotta have faith in yourself.

Maybe shoot for roles that are a step or two below what you did and get promo or keep hunting?

Amazon FreeMX OP Aug 23, 2023

Yes, will start doing that
