I think the consensus is that Google’s codebase, standards and tooling are best in class and ahead of Meta. What do you think about George saying Meta’s code is better than Google’s? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dNrTrx42DGQ&t=5584s&ab_channel=LexFridman Around 2:02
He is gotta be kidding. Meta's code is as buggy as hell due to Meta's rule; move fast and break things. reference; my experience
I don't think he's kidding. The guy will say the opposite of what everyone else thinks just to sound special. His lex episodes were amusing, but I would give too much weight to what he says.
Ha ha - I have worked at Google and Meta for several years each (15+ years total) and indeed this is crap: Google code >> Meta code. Anyone in fact can confirm this - look at the quality of the open source code from Google (eg ABSL, protobuf, GoogleSQL etc) vs equivalent code from Meta (Folly, Thrift, Scribe, etc). There is a simple reason for this: Google internal coding standards and code review and approval processes are are far more stringent and standardized as is the overall tech stack. I would even go as far as to say they are not even in the same ballpark. Ps: I just checked his LI profile and assuming I have the right George Hotz looks like he has no experience in engineering either at Google or Meta!
Confirmed
George Hotz became a celebrity of sorts for jailbreaking PlayStation and iPhone. Beyond that, he’s not accomplished much that has actually shipped.
That's horse shit. Not even remotely close. People at Google are anal retentive about code quality.
Great framing because the way code quality is emphasized at G is almost at the point that it's a serious negative.
Full of shit squared
As far as I know geohotz hasn’t worked at Google or Meta so I doubt his opinion on this holds much weight. I met him a few times when he was in the autonomous driving scene. He’s a normal dude with normal opinions when you just chat with him but as soon as he goes up on the stage he becomes provocative. Not sure if he holds back in private convos to be polite or if he fakes it for media attention when he’s on stage. Probably a bit of both.
He kinda seems like he is acting in interviews.
Being a good presenter requires being provocative. If people talked in everyday life the way they talk on stage you would just want to smack them. Like do you really think Jonny Ive talks the way he did in apple presentations in everyday life? That would be so irritating.
Given that he couldn’t last 5 weeks at twitter after claiming he could fix search in 12 weeks I don’t really trust his opinion. He’s one of those “10x” devs who always wants to refactor everything and doesn’t understand how to write code in large systems with constraints.
🍌
He hasnt seen either of codebase for sure. Meta codebase is far far worse than google’s but who cares at the end? They both work
He has worked at both, why do you say that?
Because I have worked at both
Wasn’t this guy identified as a fraud on the Internet for his lackluster engineering skills? I can’t believe people buy a self driving product his company builds.
Not at all lol
Talented hacker (esp. RE), shitty dev.
Dude couldn't remove a login prompt when looking at Twitter replies. I don't think I give a shit what he says about codebase quality.
I think his replied would be - who gives a sh it that he has not written JS before - architecture and design is what matters.
Dude is way way way better at tweaking and hacking than he is at building anything real. He’s a do 70% and pretend the rest is trivial guy. Has no idea what it takes to make something that’s better than an initial sketch.
