Getting a car inspection, what should I have them check?

10 year old used Toyota Camry, bought it a year ago, 120k miles on it, driven it less than 3k miles in a year. Thinking of taking it to the auto shop to get inspected, what things should I ask them to check? Don't want to be ripped off.

Just look up the owners manual and look at the maintenance schedule

Maintenance Schedule goes like '5000 miles - 6 months' , '10000 miles - 12 months' and so on. But I've driven it less than 3k miles in a year, does that mean I do the 5k-12 months list? That only says to rotate tires, replace engine oil and oil filter. What about coolant, transmission fluid, power steering fluid, tire inflation? Those don't need to be checked?

Do you have the service history? Those fluids will have to be replaced eventually, but I always just follow the schedule. It’s different for each car, but some cars are like replace brake fluid every 30k, replace spark plugs every 60k, etc. If your car is around 120k miles, it should have had major maintenance done on it. If not, you should get it done Maybe you should just find a reputable mechanic and get an inspection. Yelp has always given me good results

Just go to Pep boys or something. They do a full body(no pun intended) check up

Besides the normal stuff you listed, you should try to find out when the timing belt was last replaced, that is an expensive repair if it breaks.

I’d actually go to a Toyota dealership to see what they recommend to start. I haven’t had one be sketch on me. Yeah, you might pay more for any repairs, but there’s something to be said about using genuine parts where they can/if available. It’s a Camry with 150k though - I wouldn’t expect many issues and for it to run another 150k.

I’m also going to the dentist. What should I check?

Why were you thinking of getting it checked? To sell it? Call a local Toyota dealer and ask about their used car inspection since you seem to be asking generally.

TripAdvisor chikabomb OP Jun 30, 2018

No just to check if it's in good shape. I had a compete inspection done a year ago. But I found someone that will do it for $10 so I'm good :)
