So I started working at accenture after graduating from college at the end of September 2021 as a software architect analyst in the technology consulting group. The entire time I’ve been on a project at Meta, and more specifically, I have been doing data engineering for Meta since mid December. I’m getting annoyed at the fact that my TC is 🥜 compared to a FTE doing DE at Facebook. First of all, I want to pursue data science full time (I have previous work and research experience in DS), but DE is a skill set I need to grow anyway so I’m not mad about the work I’m doing. Seems like ACN has DS projects but they are few and far between. Basically, feeling lost on what to do next. 1) try to get poached by Meta. wondering how common it is for consultants to get poached by the client company. Additionally how does this even happen. 2) stay at ACN, roll off of Meta DE project once I’ve learned everything I can and pursue a DS focused project at ACN. Stay until my bonus is good (1yr) or til stocks and 401k matching are vested (2yr) 3) interview for DS roles not at ACN and quit if successful. Only downside to this is id lose my bonus and all the 401k matching and stocks wouldn’t be vested. current level: analyst TC: 82k salary, 10k bonus loc: seattle #datascience #tech #meta #accenture #dataengineering
Not from a FANG, but companies don’t hire contractors/ consultants with the goal to convert them to FTE. You need a VERY strong relationship with your boss for that to happen, on top of being very competent. With this much effort, just leetcode and gtfo
How are you surviving with that TC in Seattle?
It is hard to be poached, but you should be able to get hired, just apply and go through the interviews. They are airways looking to hire.
Don’t expect to get poached. In the the best case scenario you still need to pass a full interview loop. If you’re capable and have supportive meta colleagues then they may help you get an interview and prepare. The easiest path for you is to apply to meta as a DE and then internally transfer to DS. DS/DE are sister roles at Meta and it is fairly common for people to go back and forth. There is also quite a bit of overlap in the responsibilities. Don’t waste time trying to switch to ds at Accenture. Everyone else is trying to do the same thing. If you succeed it’s like winning the lottery but getting a candy bar as the prize.
What’s your bill rate to Meta?
As a consultant, I can say that it is incredibly common to get poached by clients. I actually was just poached myself and am starting in late March at my ex-client. The key to enabling yourself to be poached is to establish really great connections and obviously have excellent delivery so you show them you’re indispensable (bc if poached, they don’t have to worry about you rolling off the engagement). Worst case scenario, you should come out of this with some solid referrals from a few people at least. Long story short, show them how valuable you are, go the extra mile and treat every client interaction as though it were essentially an interview (obviously not as formal as a true interview but you get my point)
Ok but did you go to a faang company? Getting poached to a dinosaur like MetLife, AT&T or Citibank is a completely different situation. Hiring managers there can just wave you into the company with a perfunctory behavioral interview.
Don't expect this to happen at meta, which is what the op is asking. A lot of clients get consultants for their expertise mostly because they lack them. But FANG don't use consults the same way. I am not saying this is not impossible, but this is not a common practice at meta. Just wanted to share my experience.
These staffing agencies make big bucks on CWs. Try to get a recommendation from your manager for a FTE in his team or any others. It is frustrating.
You won't get poached. ACN may prevent that if it is written in their contract with meta. and you'd need to apply for a full time role like everyone else. At most you can get a strong recommendation from FTE you worked with. Especially ones with pull.
