Hey blind fam, I’ve been applying to several publishers in gaming this year, but have been having some terrible numbers: AAA Publishers: 10 apps, 2 interviews, 0 offers AA/A Publishers: 15 apps, 0 interviews Mobile Game Studios: 5 apps, 4 interviews, 0 offers I have ~2.5 YOE doing business analysis at Ubisoft and honestly thought that having Ubi on my resume would open a ton of doors in gaming. I know the economy is bad right now, but even if all these roles have 500+ applicants, wouldn’t (.ie Rockstar or Blizzard) be interested in interviewing someone at a direct competitor? For the 4 mobile game studios I got interviews with, I was applying to roles requiring 2-4 YOE - but they were ultimately given to candidates with 8+ YOE. Would appreciate any advice or feedback on how to make a successful exit in the next 6 months. Feeling pretty shitty and I’m hungry for a new challenge. Thanks
Have you tried Riot? They are mad hiring
Thx
Sorry to say, but Ubi is not something other publishers aspire to be. When THQ had been around you might have had a shot but not anymore :) So flaunting its name is not going to impress anybody. Focus on your own skills and the value you can add instead.
Thx for the feedback. Do other publishers need to aspire to be ubisoft for them to be interested in a ubisoft candidate? I’m not a dev fwiw, I’m on the publishing side
All I am saying is that nobody will be impressed by a Ubisoft candidate any more than any other publisher's candidate.
I've been in games for over ten years. The traditional adage is that your first job is the hardest job to get. I find that in games, the second job is often the hardest and most of my friends would agree. You just need to keep grinding interviews, better yourself, and stay sane.
Thanks for the advice. Why do you say that the second job is the hardest to obtain? Does that still apply to me on the publishing side or is that more relevant for developers?
Games is a very small industry, many people already know each other. Ubisoft is not a bad place to be, but you have to be going out to meet others as much as possible
How do you recommend I do that aside from GDC and E3?
Those are good starts, you can also do stuff like what the DoF guys do and break down games and their marketing strategy. Build your own personal brand
What are you good at? Business analyst can mean a lot of things.
Is this for an engineering position? Note that while we hire lots of engineers, we do get lots of candidates (but there are more roles open). The same is not necessarily true for other disciplines. I would add though that something specific I look for in most positions on my team is experience in gaming (the need for this can vary team to team though). Stay strong and keep pushing!
Thx
