I know my timing was unfortunate, but recently I decided to pursue other opportunities outside of Microsoft more aligned with my interests. Things were going super well and I was getting quite a few follow ups until the new rules became effective earlier this month. Most recruiters from smaller companies vanished, others go around the issue without answering my concerns directly. Last week on Wednesday I had my first virtual on-site and thought things went super well - had two interviews with managers after two technical rounds (even started discussing benefits with the recruiter) and was told the final result would come the next day. It was a bit late in their time zone, so it felt like a mere formality. After days without answers I got their email today with a rejection and no feedback whatsoever. I’ll keep on studying and interviewing of course, but something tells me this was not related to my performance in the interview. In general I know when I mess up and even when I wasn’t happy with what I did I got follow ups/virtual on-sites scheduled with MongoDB, Uber and Apple. On the *hypothesis* I didn’t mess up on the technical and managerial interviews, my question is: are companies rejecting candidates on H-1B based on the obscenely high minimum compensation? Is it even worth it to continue the process with other companies? YoE: 5 (2 in the US) TC: 170k #h1b
I would assume they wouldn't go through the trouble of scheduling the virtual on-site interview etc. if the new rules are the problem. The recruiter does check if you're on H1-B beforehand, isn't it?
The interviews were scheduled juuust before the rule was announced, so maybe it took a few days for the company to catch up and rethink the recruiting strategies. I was looking for a 160k base (I have a Masters and work experience in that particular area), but I don’t think they were too thrilled with being forced to offer a 220k base for my level/YoE.
Got it. Makes sense. We'll know for sure when more people start complaining about this, I guess. I am struggling to get past phone screens at this point. Hopefully I can shed some light on this scenario soon. :)
Nope! You are tying up offer conversation rate to visa. It’s pandemic and extremely competitive environment. Hiring managers tend to have lot of choices nowadays. Doing great in all the rounds is no longer enough and you have to do better than all the candidates who compete.
Don’t disagree and I’m definitely taking this into consideration :) But I have to be extra extra extra stellar to justify receiving an offer with the new wage levels, and even then I’m not sure it would happen.
Everyone is getting ghosted. Im a us citizen and seeing the same thing
Ohh even USCs? Looks like severe recession coming soon
It is not in effect rite, there is a lawsuit filed already
The DHS rules became effective immediately after being announced. It could take months before the lawsuit forces them to roll back (like it took almost 4 months to lift a travel ban on H-1B visa holders).
